Georgia House bans genital piercings for women

"Genital piercings for women were banned by the Georgia House Wednesday as lawmakers considered a bill outlining punishments for female genital mutilation. [...] An amendment adopted without objection added "piercing" to the list of things that may not be done to female genitals. Even adult women would not be allowed to get the procedure. The bill eventually passed 160-0, with no debate.

Amendment sponsor Rep. Bill Heath, R-Bremen, was slack-jawed when told after the vote that some adults seek the piercings. "What? I've never seen such a thing," Heath said. "I, uh, I wouldn't approve of anyone doing it. I don't think that's an appropriate thing to be doing."

The ban applies only to women, not men. "

I am so sick of how people (and sadly enough, our supposed leaders, the politicians) in this country feel they have any right to control what people do to their bodies and in their personal lives. It's not affecting anyone.

Outlaws on women but not on men? I understand the whole female gential mutilation, but I don't consider piercings to be apart of that...

This whole topic just makes me cringe.

I didn't realize female genital mutilation was such a problem in Georgia.

This is dumb and considering that the one congressman didn't even know that people would choose to have their genitals pierced I cannot understand how he would consider himself educated enough to vote on that issue.

Except, unlike that, people who have their genitals pierced choose to do so and are not forced to endure anything.

So if we are going to ban genital piercing in women, not only should we ban it in men we should also ban elective plastic surgery because obviously being an adult doesn't mean you have a say over what happens to your body.

i know, really. first time i've heard of this one.

but i agree, what right do these "leaders" have in telling us what we can and cannot do to our bodies. really, does a woman getting her genitals pierced really affect anyone to the extend that they need to be banned? and i also agree, why aren't men banned from getting their genitals pierced? wouldn't they consider that mutilation too?

What a stupid law. I mean, I think it's freaky and all and I would never personally do it, but if you want to pierce your *cough* then go for it and I wish you luck.

What I want to know is how they are going to enforce this? I mean, banning the piercing parlors sure, but you can always go out of state and I am pretty sure the police have better things to do than checking women for genital piercings.

From the article :

I'd love to see that list, and see what other 'things' can't be done to female genitals. Funny how all those laws are always voted by men, by the way.

Excellent point. Now I have visions of cops patrolling around making women drop their pants to check for piercings.

*shudder*

Really, how on earth would you enforce this?

They should either ban it for both genders or ban it for neither gender. I suppose respect for personal freedom says it shouldn't be banned at all, but piercing one's genitals sounds crazy and gross to me. Not to mention potentially hazardous.

Non-sensical, rediculous, without function. Terrible.

...how would this even be checked, woman to woman?

it is kinda gross/unhealthy/unsafe, what have you, but I think that if they ban it for women, they should ban it for men, too.

I get the impression that this law was originally thought up to prevent female circumcision (a practice most Americans likely don't support), and piercing just got tacked on.

Any law preventing male "genital mutilation" would open a debate on male circumcision. How could you ban male genital piercing but not circumcision?
