General Issues Debate Thread

Alright... since a lot of people wanted this (including myself), I thought I'd start it.

So for those of you who don't know yet: Debating isn't allowed in the Parties Threads therefor we decided to have this thread where everyone can discuss/debate about anything & everything.

Whoever wants to start with a question or whatever.. then you can feel free to, since I can't really think of anything at the moment.

Just one debate thread? I thought everyone was debating on every thread BUT the party threads.

Can I suggest that a "General Issues" thread is just a little too general? Maybe it would be better to have threads dedicated to discussing particular general issues ... like gay rights, abortion etc ...

I actually thought about that but I wasn't too sure.

maybe we can pick a topic to try to stick to for this thread, then so on and so on...

Yeah I thought there was debating on every thread but the party threads as well. I know there used to be a thread for debating homosexuality and same-sex marriage and the like. Don't know what happened to that, but I do think this is a good idea. I think this board would lose a lot of its luster without political debating, as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

I'm more of a fan of specific threads but whatever works. As for topic ideas, some good ones are: homosexuality, abortion (controversial but I'd avoid this, people may get really upset), the patriot act, gun control, the media (too bias?, etc..).

Any of those work for me but I vote for gun control first. Anyone else care to vote?

We need a special thread to debate now? That's like having a special lane on the highway to drive in. We've been doing it in all the others. Although, I agree on a topic specific thread for debates.

I was going to start a general issues thread, but I had to think about that point first.

In the end, I believe that the best thing would be to allow a general discussion thread to move freely in any direction. That would keep it open to everyone. I mean, if you get more specific, you may not get the same interest from all sides about one particular subject. And, in turn, it might be dominated by one side or the other. Besides, like *Maria* said, people are already debating most of the issues mentioned on some of the other threads. So I think this thread could be a place where people could post questions and things that they might otherwise post in the liberal/conservative threads. Just my opinion though.

How about: "Is Bush trying to appoint judges who are against abortion rights, and is it right for him to try and ban abortion?"

I think gun control would be a good starting point - this board has seen a lot of abortion/gay marriage debates so maybe we should focus on another topic for a while.

I agree, gay marriage and abortion is based so much on opinion and personal choice while gun control can be based on actual facts and statistics, with a fair ammount of personal opinion thrown in of course. The world will never come to a consensus about abortion or gay marriage.

I am all for gun rights. I just think there need to be a thorough screening process for applicants and a waiting period of at least a week.

Okay. Gun control.

I think we need more. I honestly don't see what someone's problem is with having a background check unless they were likely to use the gun illegally, in which case they shouldn't be getting it anyway. And I'm fine with someone have a gun for hunting, but what the hell do you need a handgun for? "Protection"? I don't buy that.

I also think we should have kept the Assault Rifle Ban. The majority of the NRA favored it! This honestly makes no sense to me whatsoever.

The assault rifle ban is amazing. All these people think someone's running around with an UZI or an automatic....guess what. They're not!
The ban was so specific that it was amazing. You couldn't sell an AK-47, so companies made guns that were identical to the AK-47 and named it something different and sold them...that wasn't illegal. Oh, and now you can buy a clip of 30 rounds of ammo as opposed to 15. Well, if you can't hit something in 15 shots, you probably won't have a very good success rate with 30.
My whole thing about guns is the handgun thing. My dad owns a Python .38 and I own a Ruger .22 and we're getting a Beretta 9mm...neither of us plans on knocking over a liquor store anytime soon. We simply enjoy shooting for fun, and also for home protection. Honestly, if someone comes into my home looking to steal or hurt my family, I have no problem putting a piece of metal into their skull. People seem to think that those of us that own handguns are intent on doing some people hunting, that is a big generalization. I'm tired of the majority having restrictions put on them because of what the minority does. Yeah, a few people with handguns will kill someone, but then a few people with cars will drive drunk but no one's trying to ban cars.
