Girl Dies After Being Accidentally Shot By Stepfather

By Cynthia Cisneros
ABC13 Eyewitness News
(8/15/04 - HOUSTON) — A five-year-old girl is dead after being accidentally shot by her own stepfather.

Detectives say the man grabbed his gun early Sunday morning after hearing a noise inside his home on Kentucky near Brackenridge in northeast Houston. He fired at what he believed to be a burglar, hitting the girl in the chest.

"The father, unfortunately believing that a burglar was inside the house, shot the child," said Ramon Cervantes, Jr. with the Houston Police Department. The family that lives there was clearly concerned about their security with burglar bars and a fence all the way around the house.

Neighbors are now organizing a collection to help pay for the funeral."It's a tragedy -- an accident," says Sylverio Portillo, a friend of the family. Portillo rents a room from the Pina family and lives in the house with them. He tells Eyewitness News he heard the shot overnight that killed five-year-old Alejandra Hernandez. "My friend told me he heard something and thought that it was an intruder. He shot his gun, but it was his daughter," said Portillo. "She had gotten up to go to the bathroom. "Houston police say Alejandra was taken to LBJ Hospital where she died. Her stepfather, the man who police say shot her, Alguin Pina, has not been charged.
The news has saddened neighbors but doesn't surprise them. A rash of recent break-ins has neighbors on edge. "But I mean people just like my neighbors, they stole their bikes and everything and this just started happening about two weeks ago," said neighbor Angela Gray.

Alejandra’s friend from across the street says he'll miss her. "She was my best friend and when I had money, I bought her everything that she wants because she's like my little sister," said Juan Rodriguez. The case has been referred to the Harris County grand jury.

I think this is tragic. To think she was just going to go to the restroom and she ended up dying instead.

That's horrible. But i'm having a little problem with it, because the girl is five years old, not that tall. Did he think it was a midget was robbing his place? I feel sorry for the family.

It saddens me that that girl died like that, but I feel no sympathy for her step-father. If you would be as irresponsible to shoot something you saw when you know you have a 5 year old little girl in that house without at least confirming that it was an intruder....That makes me mad. I hope that she was the only child in the house, that's for sure. Wouldn't want any of the other children to get killed...

How he could look at a 5 year old in the dark and think it was a burglar is beyond me. And he hit her right in the chest... that shows that he took the time to aim which means he examed the figure.. Meaning he had to know it was the shape of a child. If you ask me something more had to be going on in that house..

This story is very tragic. I am feeling sorry for the poor girl's family. But what the are you doing with a loaded gun in your house when you have children around? That doesn't make too much sense to me.

Another tragic completly unnecessary death at the hands of a gun.

Makes me realise how glad I am that the disgusting things are not legally allowed over here. Theres no justification for it at all- self protection? As if; too many of these accidents happen far too many.

Exactly!
If he was the only one home then it would be a different story - but you have a child in the house, children pee!

And how tall would that make this "burgular"

They really need to investigate this further! There is something very suss about this!

I can't imagine what the family is going through. It's awful. Yeah guns suck but imagine shooting a little girl, I couldn't live with myself.

This is very tragic. I hope her family will cope with this and just learn maybe the next time to not let paranoia overdo it.
