Fatalities in Red Lake, Minnesota School Shooting

Quote:
RED LAKE, Minn. - As many as 14 people were injured and some killed in a shooting Monday at a Minnesota high school, authorities said. Tom Lyons, chief deputy for Beltrami County, said up to 14 people were injured in the mid-afternoon shooting at Red Lake High School in far northern Minnesota. Lyons said a suspect was in custody, but he had no other details.

The FBI did not say how many people had been killed and also declined to release details.

Red Lake High School, on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, has about 300 students, according to its Web site.

Audrey Thayer, who lives in Bemidji and works as a researcher for the American Civil Liberties Union's Minnesota chapter, said the reservation was locked down by police with roadblocks.

"They have got it closed off," she said.

The reservation is about 240 miles north of the Twin Cities. It is home to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians.
From here. I've heard many different reports, ranging in the number of victims (14-18) to the fate of the shooter (suicide or captured). It's so tragic, either way, though. My thoughts are with the community and the victims' families.

If I find out it's because he'd been bullied I am gonna be pissed. Bullying needs to STOP!

I am so sad that this has to happen. Guns are way to accessible to kids in the U.S.

After the Columbine thing came out, and it showed exactly what bullies can do if they're constantly provoked, i'm surprised that it still happens so much in school. Is it really worth giving up your life to pick on someone for a few minutes in front of your friends?

They need support groups where these bullied kids can come out and talk. Talking does wonders and really helps. I should know, I'm proofed. I talked to my parents all the time and it helped. I also let my anger go in my journals and helped. Some way of communicating would help.

Yah I heard that too. He apparently didn't think his school was "pure" enough and that's why he did it. That's actually even scarier than the bullying issue.

According to AOL, he also shot his grandfather and his grandfather's companion. It also mentioned that three of the students were shot at close range. It's so terrible. Teenage suicide is awful enough and now it's escalating once again to teenage homocide.

I don't witness that much direct bullying at my school. There's a lot of people saying things about other people behind their back but not that much upfront confrontation. At times it's hard to imagine that such immature antics are still happening and are happening enough to result in events like that when even the most childish of students at my school are uncapable of doing such.

I understand the frustration that bullied kids go through, not necessarily on the same scale, but I used to be teased a lot in elementary school. I think that frustration ends up blinding people because relieving yourself of it because primary. Aside from that temporary relief, offing people off isn't going to change your situation.

And if it truthfully does have something to do with being a Neo-Nazi, then I have absolutely no comprehension of the situation or what's going on in his mind.

Not that this excuses what happened but this boy (Jeff Weise) lost his father to suicide, his mother was injured in a car accident and is in a nursing home, his cousin died, his stepfather divorced his mother and he lost a grandparent all in the space of 4 years. For someone who is between 11 and 15 that's really a lot to take. He was also on anti-depressants.

I think our social programs need to be pro-active in working with kids like this. It doesn't take a degree in psychology to realize that he might be a potential problem. Of course we need to fund our social programs and schools more that we do now so this can be accomplished. I'm not absolving him of what he did but society needs to look at this things and try to catch these kids before it happens again. Lets face it..this school shooting is one of a long line of such incidents and everytime it happens everyone acts shocked and horrified but then it gets buried in the news and nothing is done.

Isn't that just lame. Anyways I am from Minnesota myself, I think about 3 hrs away from Red Lake. I am still pretty shocked by what happened.

What a terrible, terrible tragedy. His family life was quite horrific but I'm shocked that the kids around him didn't see some signs, considering he even told them he was going to do something like this.. Yeah, they all thought he was kidding but it just sucks that not one person took him seriously... especially since Columbine. My heart just aches for all the families involved.
