Ex-detective sentenced for drug case lie
By Scott Goldstein, Globe Correspondent | February 8, 2005
A former Boston police detective pleaded guilty yesterday to charges that he lied about witnessing a September 2002 cocaine deal involving three men at a Dorchester McDonald's to justify their arrest on drug charges, officials said.
Detective Miguel Pinto pleaded guilty in Suffolk Superior Court to one count of filing a false police report and three counts of violation of constitutional rights, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said. Pinto was sentenced to two years' probation and 200 hours of community service. He resigned from the Police Department three weeks ago, Conley said.
Pinto wrote in a police report that he witnessed one man sell cocaine to another in the men's room at the McDonald's at Gallivan Boulevard and Granite Avenue on Sept. 6, 2002, while a third man waited outside. The men, whose identities have not been made public, were arrested on drug charges. But surveillance video showed Pinto was outside when he said he was in the men's room.
Conley said Pinto lacked probable cause to make the arrests. One of the three men had cocaine in his possession, and one had a large amount of cash, Conley said.
"Not only did Pinto lie . . . but three potential drug dealers went free because of it," Conley said. http://www.boston.com/news/local/mas...drug_case_lie/ | It just goes to show you, you can't really trust everyone these days. |
