Entertainment News Thread #3 : Ready for Their Close-Up

Well, Rick Sanchez no longer has a home at CNN:

CNN Anchor Fired for Jon Stewart Rant - E! Online
I think with a divorce rate that is almost 50%, it doesn't really matter what a person does with their days. There's always decent odds that they'll get divorced. It's just a statistical probability at this point, whether they're a doctor, a nurse, a teacher, a business person or someone on reality TV.

I also think lots more Reality TV couples seem to be sticking together than are getting divorced, but I don't watch nearly enough to back that statement up. All I know is most TLC couples seem to still be married. As far as I know, Sharon Tate and Gene Simmons are still going strong after decades together....

I also know that each of my parents has been divorced twice and no one's going around saying their current relationships are doomed or that their professions were to blame. There's a high percentage of divorce these days. It's just a reality.

As for Rick Sanchez, I think it isn't the fact that he "went off" on Jon Stewart that got him fired. I don't think anyone at CNN would have cared about that if he hadn't gone on to include his bosses at CNN in his description of bigot newpeople.

Quote:
When Dominick pointed out that Stewart was Jewish and a minority himself, Sanchez dug in even deeper, saying, “I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they, the people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority? Yeah.”

Either way, it sounds to me like he's getting ready to move on to FOX News. That's the kind of position they seem to espouse over there, right?

Henri Matisse bronze could fetch $35m

A life-size bronze sculpture by Henri Matisse could fetch up to $35m (£22m) when it goes up for auction next month.

The work, titled Back IV (Nu de Dos, 4eme etat), will be on offer at Christie's in New York on 3 November.

Owned by an anonymous private collector, it has never been sold at auction before.

Conor Jordan, head of impressionist and modern art at Christie's America, said it was a "milestone in the evolution of modernist style".

"Conceived on an epic scale, Back IV is a powerfully reductive expression of the human form," he added.

Picasso record

The sculpture is from a series of four that Jordan described as the artist's most ambitious project.

"We expect tremendous enthusiasm from collectors around the world who will recognise this superb bronze as one of the most important sculptural achievements of the 20th century," said Jordan.

There were 12 bronzes produced of each piece in the series.

Among the 12 Back IV works created, all but two are in museum collections including London's Tate Modern, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Earlier this year, Christie's sold the most expensive work ever auctioned, Pablo Picasso's Nude, Green Leaves and Bust, which made $106.5m (£70m).

Sheesh. Sure, you could solve hunger and poverty issues in a couple African countries or, you know, buy a piece of art.

Yeah, I think the stresses of the world can create alot of tension between couples. No surprise that the divorse rate keeps escalating.

Well, Rick Sanchez apologized on Good Morning America this morning.

Link to story

I have to say, much as I think the sentiments he chose to express are borderline racist and petty, I sorta feel sorry for the guy. I don't know. None of it makes what he says any the less reprehensible.

But this is a guy who has a reputation for being a self-agrandizing meathead. I've never gotten the impression that he's hateful, more that he's a ginormous idiot.

Of course, whomever is capable of saying that sort of thing in public has to have some rage issues.

Mika sister impaled on railings after fourth floor fall

The sister of singer Mika is critically ill after falling from a fourth-floor window and being impaled on railings.

Paloma Penniman, 28, suffered multiple injuries in the fall in Gledhow Gardens, Kensington, south-west London.

Police said the incident, which happened in the early hours of Sunday, was not being treated as suspicious.

Ms Penniman is in the Royal London Hospital. A spokesman for Mika, 27, real name Michael Penniman Jr, said she was "critical but stable".

"Paloma had a serious accident," he said.

"The family have asked for privacy at this time."

The London Fire Brigade also attended and spent about an hour cutting Ms Penniman free before she was taken to hospital.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Police were called to an address at 0515 BST after reports a woman was impaled on railings after falling from a window.

"Inquiries into the circumstances have begun. It is being treated as non-suspicious."

Mika, born in Beirut but based in the UK, came to prominence in 2007 with his album Life in Cartoon Motion, which sold more than 5.6 million copies worldwide.

It helped Mika win a Brit Award and receive a Grammy Award nomination.

He released his second studio album The Boy Who Knew Too Much in 2009 and is currently on tour.

I hope she recovers.

And I hope this was either an accident or some construction malfeasance, because I really hope she wasn't trying to commit suicide.

I have to admit that, aside from his music, I know very little about Mika.

He may of saved himself afterall. Not sure if it's enough for CNN to take him back though.

I can't believe it but I just heard that Courtney Cox and David Arquette are splitting up. Very shocked over that. Oh, and now Christina Aguilera and her man. Gee whiz. Truly sad news.

Exactly. I think we've all shot our mouths unwisely at one time or another.

My hat's off to him for being grown up enough to not only apologize personally to Jon Stewart (or at least have a conversation with the man) but also going on TV for a public mea culpa.

I still think he's a bit of an idiot, but at least he's got some decency in him.

Yeah, the public media would be the hard part.

I was thinking that picking up the phone and apologizing to someone you don't even know would be harder for me.

Either way, I respect him for doing that.

Is he really looking for a job at Fox News?
