I see what you're saying and I think it's right on the money. You're absolutely right.

I was actually trying to deflect arguments I was anticipating. I get so much flack in real life for my absolute refusal to watch any Roman Polansky or any Woody Allen flick, so I was anticipating the same thing on here... hence my stating that it's not the same thing.

Truth of the matter is, I happen to believe that sex with a minor (in the specific cases of Polansky and Allen anyway) is actually worse. Not that violence is ever okay, but there's abuse of power on top of the physical abuse in what Polansky and Allen did.

I Annie Hall too. And Roman Polanski's MacBeth is probably my favorite Shakespeare adaptation.

I don't actively ban artists, but I don't actively seek them out if they've done something terrible. The way I see RP and WA are both brilliant artists. But there are a lot of brilliant artists out there, and I'll choose to see their movies instead.

Some sad entertainment news:

Golden Girls Star Beatrice Arthur Dies - Tributes, Bea Arthur : People.com

Beatrice Arthur, the larger-than-life actress who scored on Broadway as the original matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof and the hard-drinking actress in Mame before she went on to star in the groundbreaking '70s TV series Maude and, in the '80s, the beloved sitcom The Golden Girls, died early Saturday morning. She was 86.

Dan Watt, a spokesman for Arthur's family, told the Associated Press that the star had been suffering with cancer, though he did not specify what kind. She died peacefully at her Los Angeles home with her family by her side, said Watt, who remembered Arthur as "a brilliant and witty woman."

Maude, which debuted on CBS in 1972 (and ran until 1978) was a spin-off of the hit All in the Family. As the liberal cousin of archconservative Archie Bunker's wife Edith, the much-married Maude wasn't afraid to broach such controversial (especially for TV at the time) topics as abortion and civil rights.

Golden Girls, a popular NBC Saturday-night staple from 1985 to 1992, featured Arthur as the outspoken Dorothy Zbornak, who shared a Florida home with three other women, including her mother, played by Estelle Getty – who died last July, at 84. The other stars were Rue McClanahan and Betty White.

Born Bernice Frankel in New York City but raised in Maryland, where her parents ran a women's clothing store, Arthur debuted on the Off Broadway stage in New York in the 1940s, with her Broadway musical triumphs – though her singing voice was deep and scratchy – in the mid-'60s.

Married and divorced twice, Arthur took her stage name (in part) from her first husband, the screenwriter, director and producer Robert Alan Aurthur, whose credits include the Bob Fosse film All That Jazz. With second husband, Mame director Gene Saks, she adopted two sons, Matthew, 47, and Daniel, 44. They survive her.

Of her powerful stage and TV persona, which often found her cast in the same sort of role, Arthur once said, "Look – I'm 5-feet-9, I have a deep voice and I have a way with a line. What can I do about it? I can't stay home waiting for something different. I think it's a total waste of energy worrying about typecasting."

What sad news. I really loved her on Golden Girls. My condolences to her family.

Interesting - I used to watch the show with my grandmother as well. It was a great show. She's going to be missed truly.

I think you're right. But it's just extremely sad that cancer took her life. It's seems to be the deadliest disease around these days.

I think I'll make a separate thread for this on the board.

Lost actor faces a sexual harassment charge, along with ABC:

'Lost' Actor Henry Ian Cusick And ABC Face Sex Harassment Claim

I have to say, the most disturbing part of this story to me is the response I've seen from Lost fans (such as reading the replies from that post). I know the man is a good actor and I'm all for innocent until proven guilty, but they are ATTACKING the woman in question. No one seems to care that a woman might have been sexually harassed and fired for it, because people want for him to be innocent.

The concept of "innocent until proven guilty" is a joke. Everyone has an opinion. For centuries, women have been perceived as the vixens, the initiators of sexual incidents. If a man sexually harasses or even rapes a women, then a large portion of society makes the remark that she did something to deserve it. She acted in a way that made the man unable to restrain himself. Just watch. I'm sure the defense will spin it that way. If he did it, then he's a pig. If he didn't then she's crying wolf. I'm not making any judgments one way or the other.

RIP Bea Arthur. A grand dame and a class act to the end.

Henry Ian Cusick... I hope the truth, whatever it is, comes out. For the most part, I'm more shocked that situations like this don't come out more often. Men (and women) with enlarged egos, too much power and too much time on their hands? I'm sure there's a lot of decent people out there, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are much more abuse of power than we ever hear about.

Which brings me to my final point: You'll never hear me argue that Woody Allen and Roman Polansky aren't great artists. For one thing, I wouldn't know one way or another. Mostly, though, my "boycotting" of them has nothing to do with their talent. Or with any attempt I may have at making a difference in their lives/careers. I just can't stomach the idea that even a quarter of a cent of any money I would spend on their movies would wind up in their pockets. They don't need my quarter of a cent, so it's not like I'm deluding myself into thinking it matters. But I can't stand the idea of giving any tiny amount of money to child abusers.

As a beloved actor on the show, I'm not surprised that fans are jumping to his defense. Hell, look at the nut jobs still swooning over Chris Brown even after he beat the hell out of Rihanna (and she's an idiot too for trying to excuse his behavior). Anyway, I'm not surprised. I hope the truth will come out for his sake.

The only difference there is that, as I understand it, most of Chris Brown's fans are little girls. Adults should know better.

I do think there should perhaps be an awareness that false sexual harassment claims are rare. The one who almost always pays the highest price for reporting it is the woman herself. It's like the myth of the "rampant false rape claims".

I know Lost is a great show (ditto for the cast), but I'll admit they all turn me off with their off screen shenanigans. It might be b/c I'm not a big fan. And I shouldn't lump all those actors together. I'm sure some of them are decent and law abiding. But between this and the rampant DUIs, I'm pretty sick of them.

Honestly, that's what I'm thinking as well. But, you know, innocent till proven guilty and all that...
