Kate Winslet in line for Emmy award

Kate Winslet, Martin Scorcese and Guy Pearce all up for prizes this year at this year's Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

Winslet and Pearce are both nominated for Mildred Pierce, a drama about a woman who bakes her way out of poverty.

The mini-series has nine nominations, second only to comedy show Modern Family, which has 11.

A taped comedy routine by Alec Baldwin that was to open the ceremony has been cut because it contained a joke about the News Corp phone-hacking scandal.

News Corp owns Fox, which is broadcasting the awards. Fox called the joke inappropriate, the Associated Press reported.

Scorcese is shortlisted for directing the pilot of Prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire, which dominated last week's arts and crafts Emmys, taking home seven prizes including outstanding cinematography.

The HBO programme is the show to beat in the best drama series category, where it threatens to rob advertising drama Mad Men of its fourth successive Emmy.

Other nominees in the category are The Good Wife, Dexter, Friday Night Lights and Game Of Thrones.

In HBO's Mildred Pierce, Winslet, 36, plays a divorced single mother who decides to open a restaurant business during 1930s Depression-era California.

The role was famously played by Joan Crawford in a 1945 film noir.

Winslet's nomination is for best actress in a mini-series, which pits her against Elizabeth McGovern, who plays the Countess of Grantham in ITV1's Downton Abbey.

Jean Marsh is also nominated in this category for her portrayal of parlour maid Rose Buck in the BBC's Upstairs, Downstairs.

Marsh, who co-created the series, played the same part more than 40 years ago and was nominated for an Emmy in 1974, 75 and 76.

Upstairs, Downstairs has also landed Dame Eileen Atkins a nomination for best supporting actress, thanks to her role as intimidating matriarch Lady Maud Holland.

She battles against Dame Maggie Smith, who plays a parallel character in Downton Abbey.

Other notable nominees include Hugh Laurie, for his role as misanthropic medical genius Gregory House; Steve Buscemi, who plays corrupt politician Enoch "Nucky" Thompson in Boardwalk Empire; and Laura Linney, who stars in black comedy The Big C.

The awards will be hosted by Glee's Jane Lynch, herself shortlisted for best supporting actress in a comedy series.

Goodie bags

Presenters at the ceremony include movie star Zooey Deschanel and comedienne Amy Poehler.

At Saturday's run-through, Poehler jokingly presented her Emmy to Barack Obama, "for this rehearsal only."

When producers asked her to practice accepting the award, in case the recipient was absent, she playfully admonished: "[He] thought he was too special to come tonight. Bad move."

Meanwhile, stars attending the ceremony are being lavished with the customary gift bags.

Despite the economic downturn, freebies are in great abundance with notebook computers, designer sunglasses, handbags and even high-end baby strollers on offer.

But these are all distractions from the night's main prize - a golden Emmy statuette.

Shows with multiple nominations this year include Tina Fey's comedy series 30 Rock, and legal drama The Good Wife, both of which have six nods.

So, too, does Too Big To Fail, a dramatisation of the 2008 financial meltdown by LA Confidential director Curtis Hanson.

Other prominent nominees include Downton Abbey, with five, The Kennedys, Game Of Thrones, Saturday Night Live and the US adaptation of Danish police procedural The Killing, all of which have four.

So, this is from the BBC, and they're obviously going to have a British bias... but it was my door in to introduce the fact that the Emmy's are on tonight. I am watching, is anyone else?

I find the results are always very predictable, but I like the occasional spark of originality and humanity in the speeches.

Also, there's nothing better to watch right now.

Yes, am so happy with Peter Dinklage's win for Game of Thrones

Tyrion Lannister {Peter Dinklage} #4: Because that Emmy belongs to him, no matter what happens!

Also Maggie Smith's win was great, but am not too thrilled about another win for Mad men.

Coach Taylor finally won an Emmy. Congrats!

I never watched Justified, but I do know Margo Martindale and she was so sweet when she won. It was about time, too.

Also, the lead actress in a comedy "beauty pageant" thing was hilarious.

Am I the only one who thinks Mad Men is overrated?

Downton Abbey got the Emmy for best miniseries. Everyone expected Mildred Pierce, but Downton Abbey has so many characters, all with amazing actors, and still manages to make sure you know them all. Opening a can of new great acting talent every year is something only the Brits can do.

*raises hand* you're not alone. I can see why some people like it, but Boardwalk Empire deserved that Emmy imo (and I'm more of a Game of Thrones fan, but see that BE should have walked away with it).

I'm Canadian... so all those AMC, HBO, USA, whatever... shows are well outside my purview. I catch up to stuff that interests me enough eventually.

I plan on buying Downtown Abbey, for instead. Games of Thrones, too... probably, eventually.

Mad Men? Has never interested me, so I can't comment on its quality. And I really can't muster any interest in that Boardwalk Empire stuff either.

Yeah, Downton Abbey is just lovely. One of the best parts are the one-liners of Maggie Smith. There are so many characters and I found myself rooting for lots of them.

Hope you'll give Game of Thrones a look as well. Apart from the action and plotting, it also has a lot of great characters. while Peter Dinklage brings a lot of sarcastic humor. It has some good newcomers as well, and Charles Dance is absolutely perfect as 'Peter's' father.

It took me a long time before I tried Boardwalk Empire, but was drawn into it quickly. The little details which made 1920's Atlantic City come alive are most impressive.

I only watched the first episode of Boardwalk Empire and didn't find it very interesting ... guess those period dramas don't do it for me.

Yeah, if the first episode doesn't draw you in, I think you'd be better of watching something else. I was drawn in after about half an hour.

One thing I don't like about Boardwalk is the lack of female characters. For every Margaret or Gillian there are about six male criminals. Usually, I wouldn't watch shows where the gender ratio is so eschewed, but Nucky and the scenery really caught my interest.

I don't know that all period dramas should be judged by Boardwalk Empire... I mean, for one thing that one is specific to the experience of one city in a specific time in American history.

Just looking at Mildred Pierce, for instance, will give you a whole other universe, still in a specific time in American history. But with very different results.

A lot of it is acting and a lot of it is writing.

Or, you know, it could be that you're genuinely not into period dramas, which would be fair enough.

Perhaps - I do have the first season of Deadwood on DVD, so we'll see if I like that one.

I'm so happy for Kyle Chandler, I've had a crush on him since Early Edition and he is simply fantastic on Friday Night Lights. I wish Connie Britton would have won too.

I'm also very happy for Peter Dinklage, love Game of Thrones. And Maggie Smith! I haven't seen Downtown Abbey but I've loved her since Gosford Park.

I've never had the desire to watch Mad Men, the little clips I've seen haven't enticed me.

I have a weakness for English period dramas.

American period dramas about a time when people smoke a whole lot more and mysogyny was the rule of the day? Not so much. Of course, with the sheer amount of people who do enjoy Mad Men, I'm clear on the fact that it's probably me and not the show.

But that's where I am.
