Elizabeth Edwards Has Breast Cancer

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites), was diagnosed with breast cancer the day her husband and Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) conceded the presidential race.

Spokesman David Ginsberg said Mrs. Edwards, 55, discovered a lump in her right breast while on a campaign trip last week. Her family doctor told her Friday that it appeared to be cancerous and advised her to see a specialist when she could.

She put off the appointment until Wednesday so as to not miss campaign time. Mrs. Edwards had a needle biopsy performed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where Dr. Barbara Smith confirmed the cancer, Ginsberg said.

He said the cancer was diagnosed as invasive ductal cancer. That is the most common type of breast cancer, and can spread from the milk ducts to other parts of the breast or beyond.

More tests were being done to determine how far the cancer has advanced and how to treat it, he said.

Ginsberg said spirits are high at the Edwards household. "Everybody feels good about it, that this is beatable," he said.

Edwards, who leaves his North Carolina Senate seat in January, said in a statement, "Elizabeth is as strong a person as I've ever known. Together, our family will beat this."

I adore Elizabeth Edwards and am saddened by this news. Like the article states, she seems to be a very strong women...I believe she'll fight it hard and overcome it.

It certainly does suck but she'll get good medical care so hopefully it works out for her. I admire her a great deal and she will be in my thoughts.

I'll keep her in my thoughts and prayers...

that must have been a horrible day for their family, first the cancer and then to have to give up the presidential race

This is so awful. But I know Elizabeth Edwards is strong and optimistic by nature, and she'll whip this.

My mom had breast cancer as well and she survived it and just by Elizabeth's nature it seems like if anybody can overcome this - it is her. She has the support of so many in our country and the most optimistic husband ever. I just wish they didn't have to find out the day they conceeded, that's like a double whammy. T_T

I feel the same way. I mean, she risked alot just wanting to wait till after the election to get checked. Most women would probably just run to the doctor if they learned they had a lump but she didn't. I pray that she gets better soon.

I'm incredibly saddened by this. I bawled my eyes out when I heard.

During the primaries and the campaign, I admired Elizabeth. She was a symbol of the modern women - she had an important job but still ensured that she was a mother to her children. She balanced the job that is so hard for women - to have a job as well sa care for her children.

I was looking forward to her time as Second Lady. She had opinions and wasn't afraid to voice. She was very intelligent and just a lovely woman.

It's really sad to hear today that she had cancer because it is five years today since I lost my Nana from cancer so it's especially saddening.

However, I know that Elizabeth will get through this and it will be a fight she will win.
