Earthquake rattles Quebec

Quote:
(Canoe CNews)

RIVIERE-DU-LOUP, Que. (CP) - A moderate earthquake rolled across Quebec early Sunday that was centred near this small city on the St. Lawrence River and could be felt as far away as Montreal.

The Geological Survey of Canada said the 5.4 magnitude tremor occurred at 1:17 a.m. and its epicentre was under the St. Lawrence River.

Guillaume Caron was on a break from his job at the Restaurant Trans-Canadien when he felt the quake.

Caron was outside smoking a cigarette when he said he felt something "rumble" behind him, adding his back was to river.

"The rumbling went on for about 15 seconds," Caron said.

He also said he saw the gas pumps at the restaurant's service centre shake during the quake.

Caron said guests at a nearby motel were panicking and came out of their rooms to see what was going on.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but the geological survey spokeswoman Sylvia Hayek said such quakes can cause minor damage within 50 kilometres of the epicentre.

The quake was felt as far west as Ottawa and as far south as Boston - each 550 kilometres from the epicentre.

Hayek said quakes are common in Quebec's Charlevoix area, but most are too small to be felt.

Another small earthquake was felt recently in Quebec near Huntingdon, about 70 kilometres southwest of Montreal.
Oohkay.. That may be two provinces over, but still a little too close if you know what I mean.

I'm in Montreal and was awake doing email stuff last night. Just heard a couple of things rattle in my apartment.

There are often rumbler type earthquakes here. A couple of years back there was one that woke me up because the whole building was shaking for about 30 seconds. And a few years back... when I was living in a high rise apartment building... I was woken up in the middle of the night because the building was swaying and the drop leaf of my dinning room table was banging against the wall. Was an earthquake.

Quakes here usually don't do much damage... just cause buildings to crack and stuff fall off shelves at places near the epicentre.

Um, I'm in the same province. So, yeah, I know what you mean, M. Like Maggie aka Sarah I'm in Montreal too, and I didn't know this 'til I came here to see if anybody posted on the RCMP thread.
