Dunkin' Donuts Yanks Rachael Ray Ad

I don't even know what to say about this - it's the height of absurdity. I feel like boycotting Dunkin' Donuts because of them pulling the ad:

Dunkin' Donuts yanks Rachael Ray ad

May 27, 2008
Does Dunkin’ Donuts really think its customers could mistake Rachael Ray for a terrorist sympathizer? The Canton-based company has abruptly canceled an ad in which the domestic diva wears a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men.

Some observers, including ultra-conservative Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin, were so incensed by the ad that there was even talk of a Dunkin’ Donuts boycott.

‘‘The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad,’’ Malkin yowls in her syndicated column.

‘‘Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons.’’

The company at first pooh-poohed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh. But the right-wing drumbeat on the blogosphere continued and by yesterday, Dunkin’ Donuts decided it’d be easier just to yank the ad.

Said the suits in a statement: ‘‘In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial.’’

(In case you’re wondering, the stylist who selected the offending scarf was not Gretta Enterprises boss Gretchen Monahan, who appears on Ray’s TV show as a style consultant.)

For her part, Malkin was pleased with Dunkin’s response: ‘‘It’s refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists.’’

ETA - Seems I haven't had my coffee yet - can one of the mods correct my spelling of Dunki to Dunkin' in the title? Thanks.

That's so ridiculous. I edited the title.

lol if you click "Go Advanced" you should be able to edit the title

It is stupid, but I wouldn't boycott DD simply for caving into a bunch of fear mongers. Now if they were donating $ to said monger that'd be a different story.

oh..ok..I couldn't figure out why I wouldn't be allowed to edit. Thanks...

But it doesn't even look like a keffiyeh IMO. It's a scarf that matches her top.

I like Rachel Ray, I mean, no one's forcing you to watch her. I don't watch her show or anything but I've seen her $40 a day show on Food Network and liked it. I think it's pathetic. It's a scarf. I've seen other people wearing the same thing and a big deal hasn't been made. I hate Fox News and most of their broadcasters and correspondents are simply ignorant people attempting to drum up sentiments sympathetic to their own ideals.

I found this article on another site 5 minutes ago. I said big ****ing deal. There is probably a million other similar looking scarfs their just not on the news and I think the stylist was unaware. I live in Canada where there aren't as many Dunkin Donuts and if this happened Canada it wouldn't be considered news. It's not Dunkin Donuts fault that there are intollerant and easilly offended people in the world but I don't believe in pulling the ad because of a group of people bastardizing conservatives.

A really weak move on DD's part but I'll still drink their coffee.

It's interesting, though, how the world is just getting more and more easily offended or nervous or whatever every day. I'm all for avoiding generalizations and trying to be politically correct. I think it's probably best when people try to get along and think before they act...

But a little common sense never hurt anyone either.

Actually, Dunki Donuts has a nice ring to it

I agree, this is ridiculous. When I first read that article, I thought the scarf was covering her head (as what it seemed to try to reference) but it's just covering her neck.

Hah..yes. I could start a new company, franchise it and then become a millionaire like some of those Dunkin' Donuts franchise owners.

But seriously this is just crazy. It's not even that nice of a scarf IMO much less something that a "terrorist" would wear.

I basically like Rachael Ray but she's in serious overkill terrority. For awhile there she was on every box of Wheat Thins, Triscuits etc. in the supermarket.

The news media probably has nothing to plug in for today so they chose some silly stuff.

Unless if I'm wrong, most "terrorists" clothing are plain. And I never seen that sort of pattern on them before.
