Dixie Carter Dies

Dixie Carter, a true southern lady, dies at 70

Quote:
Dixie Virginia Carter died April 10, 2010 at the age of 70, cause of death undisclosed. Dixie Carter was a stage, film and television actress. She was best known for her role in the sitcom Designing Women (1986-1993)

Carter's acting beginning began in 1960 when she made her professional stage debut in a Memphis production of Carousel. She moved to New York City in 1963 and got a part in a production of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale.

In 1974 she tried her acting skills on the soap opera, One Life to Live. Here she filled in for actress Nancy Pinkerton as Dorian Cramer, later was cast in the role of Assistant D.A. Olivia Brandeis "Brandy" Henderson on the soap opera The Edge of Night from 1974-76.

Other series Carter was a part of were Out of the Blue, On Our Own, Diff'rent Strokes and Filthy Rich (1982). Carter's appearance in Filthy Rich paved the way for her best-known role, that of interior decorator Julia Sugarbaker in the 1980s/1990s television program Designing Women, set in Atlanta, Georgia.

Carter was joined on set of Designing Women, on occasion, with Hal Holbrook, her real-life husband as Reese Watson, and Carter's daughters, Ginna and Mary Dixie as Julia Sugarbaker's nieces, Jennifer and Camilla.

In 1996 Carter published a memoir titled Trying to Get to Heaven, in which she talked frankly about her life with Hal Holbrook and her experiences on Designing Women as well

She had a very great career. I personally enjoyed her in Designing Women so much!

Yes, I remember her from Diff'rent Strokes and Designing Women. This is truly a shock. Was she ill or something?

So sad. I loved her on Family Law.

And 70 is too young to die. But cancer, if it was cancer, is a bitch.

Well they are keeping it hush hush, but it sounds like complications due to cancer. And those complications can be tough, depending on the treatments and kind of cancer. Sad.

By what I've heard from her former colleagues, she was a classy dame.

Now, I really want Family Law to come out on DVD...
