DeLay Indicted

Well, its been quite a few weeks in the lives of top Republicans. We've had Hurricane Katrina which exposed the ineptness of Brown and Chertoff and damaged Bush's reputation even further. And the Plame thing is still simmering away for Karl Rove.

And now...

Quote:
A Texas grand jury on Wednesday charged Rep. Tom DeLay and two political associates with conspiracy in a campaign finance scheme, forcing the House majority leader to temporarily relinquish his post. A defiant DeLay insisted he was innocent and called the prosecutor a "fanatic." "I have done nothing wrong ... I am innocent," DeLay told a Capitol Hill news conference in which he criticized the prosecutor, Ronnie Earle, repeatedly. DeLay called Earle an "unabashed partisan zealot" and a "fanatic."

Poor little Tommy - he gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar and has to resort to name calling that doesn't seem supported with, you know, actual facts.

Quote:
While Earle is an elected Democrat, as Media Matters for America has previously noted, a June 17 editorial in the Houston Chronicle commended his work: "During his long tenure, Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle has prosecuted many more Democratic officials than Republicans. The record does not support allegations that Earle is prone to partisan witch hunts." This assertion supports Earle's own claim about his record; a March 6 article in the El Paso Times reported: "Earle says local prosecution is fundamental and points out that 11 of the 15 politicians he has prosecuted over the years were Democrats."

Well, now DeLay has been indicted on a second charge:

Article:

AUSTIN, Texas - A Texas grand jury indicted Rep. Tom DeLay on a new charge of money laundering Monday, less than a week after another grand jury leveled a conspiracy charge that forced DeLay to temporarily step down as House majority leader. Both indictments accuse DeLay and two political associates of conspiring to get around a state ban on corporate campaign contributions by funneling the money through a political action committee to the Republican National Committee in Washington.

DeLay seems confident that he'll beat these charges, and maybe he will, but I feel that his reputation has suffered irreparable damage, and I feel that his days of being an effective Congressional leader are over. I don’t understand enough about the intricacies of campaign financing to know if DeLay committed a real crime, but the Bush Administration and the Republican Party seem to revel in a “Greed is Good” type of mentality, so these indictments don’t surprise me at all.

Campaign finance is convoluted enough that legality is a fine line, methinks. Delay has been charged with ethics violations and racketeering many times in the past, so this doesn't surprise me either Wouldn't surprise me if he did all of those things either
