Daughter arraigned on murder charges

The Associated Press
KETCHIKAN — Rachelle Waterman solicited help in the killing of her mother, according to a criminal complaint charging her with first-degree murder.

The 16-year-old girl wiped away tears during an appearance Saturday in Craig District Court while Craig Magistrate Kay Clark read the criminal complaint against her. It charges her in an alleged plot to kill her mother, 48-year-old Lauri Waterman, whose body was found in a burning van on Sunday.

Rachelle Waterman's father, Doc Waterman, sat about 10 feet behind his daughter during her arraignment.

Waterman's arraignment was followed by a similar hearing for one of two co-defendants, Jason Arrant, 24, of Klawock. The third defendant is Brian Radel, 24, of Thorne Bay. All three are charged with first-degree murder.

Both men were accused of working together on Nov. 13 and Nov. 14 in a plan to kidnap and then kill Lauri Waterman. They allegedly cooperated in taking her minivan and body to a remote logging road on Prince of Wales Island where Radel doused the vehicle with gasoline and set it on fire. Arrant then drove Radel away from the scene, according to the complaint.

The complaint against Rachelle Waterman relied on statements by all three co-defendants. The complaint says the girl told one of the suspects when she and her father would be out of town.

Alaska State Trooper Randy McPherron wrote in the complaint that Arrant said that Waterman had solicited his help in murdering her mother on three prior occasions.

Lauri Waterman's body was found in her smoldering Plymouth Voyager van early Sunday afternoon, near the end of a logging road in a remote location. Her husband reported her missing after he returned to Craig from a meeting in Juneau. Rachelle Waterman was out of town at a volleyball tournament in Anchorage.

Lt. Rodney Dial of the Alaska State Troopers told KRBD Radio in Ketchikan that the plot to kill Lauri Waterman was developed months ago.

Rachelle Waterman had posted to an online journal dating back to February. In the journals, which she titled "My crappy life, the inside look of an insane person." She says she lives in Hell, Alaska, details conflicts with her mother and writes about a desire to commit violent acts against herself and others, KRBD reported.

One of her last entries was posted Nov. 14, hours after troopers say Arrant told her her mother had been killed. In the entry, she writes about her trip to Anchorage and having purchased some new boots, KRBD reported.

In a final entry last Thursday, Waterman wrote that her mother had been murdered and that she would not have computer access for a few days because police were confiscating it, KRBD reported.

At the request of Ketchikan District Attorney Dan Schally, Clark set bail for Arrant at $250,000, the same amount set for Radel. Rachelle Waterman's bail was set at $150,000.

Schally said that while the teen shared the same responsibility for what occurred as did Radel and Arrant, she was not as involved in some respects and did not pose the same danger to the community. Her status as a minor also influenced his request for a lower bail amount.

The Ketchikan Public Defenders Office was appointed to represent all three defendants.

Doc Waterman, 60, appeared shaken throughout his daughter's arraignment hearing. When it ended, he stood up in the aisle, reached out and touched her elbow as troopers escorted her from the courtroom.

Clark ordered the two men to be transported to Ketchikan Correctional Center. She ordered Rachelle Waterman transported to a Department of Corrections facility in Juneau.

Troopers transported all three defendants off Prince of Wales Island Saturday afternoon.

Her last post reads:

"Just to let everyone know, my mother was murdered

I won't have computer acess until the weekend or so because the police took my computer to go through the hard drive. I thank everyone for their thoughts and e-mails, I hope to talk to you when I get my computer back. "

Sad... Just sad....

Oh I agree. I meant sad that she actually killed her mother. I hope she rots in jail.

You know, I don't even think she realises what she's done, the murder and the writing about on her LJ. It's just too sick

Man, that really is sick, and selfish, and every other pejorative term that comes to mind. I really think that Live Journal should be taken down. sick little jag, I’ve said this before elsewhere, but I’m so sorry for your loss.

People flock to online journal after 16-year-old's arraignment

BETH BRAGG
COMMENT

(Published: November 28, 2004)

"Just to let everyone know, my mother was murdered."

This simple yet startling sentence marks the last entry Rachelle Waterman made in her Internet journal before she was arrested on charges she participated in killing her mother. And it marks the beginning of an online discussion that's as remarkable for its popularity as its content.

Waterman is the 16-year-old high school honor student from Craig jailed with two 24-year-old men who troopers say schemed for months to kill 48-year-old Lauri Waterman.

Waterman started her diary on LiveJournal.com in September of last year, and anyone with Internet access can read the 100-plus entries she's written.

She made her final entry Nov. 18, the Thursday after she spent the weekend in Anchorage playing in the state volleyball tournament. While she was at the tournament, police say, her two accomplices killed her mother.

The Nov. 18 entry includes two more sentences by Waterman explaining she won't be online for a while, because police seized her computer.

For several days, the Web site was quiet. Then came stories about Waterman's arrest and arraignment, some of which mentioned the journal. Since then, it's become a hot spot.

On Wednesday, the day of the arraignment, 11 readers had commented on Waterman's final entry. By midday Friday, the number was up to 256. Twenty-four hours later, it was over 1,600.

Most seem to be written by teens and young adults. Many are glib, some are heartfelt, a few are disturbing and a number are obscene.

Taken together, they create a fascinating peephole into a world where lock-and-key diaries have been replaced by journals written for the whole planet to read and respond to, a world where voyeurism has been compounded by participation.

This is a no-filter, no-editors world where people speak their mind in sometimes profane outbursts. Sometimes, they don't really have all that much to say, but feel compelled to comment anyway, like a poster named Newton. His or her contribution: "Posting in a legendary journal entry.''

That's it. Newton just wanted to log on and leave his mark on a thread some are calling "legendary.''

For people like Newton, there must be a thrill in feeling like you're part of a sensational story. Close to a thousand people gathered outside the courthouse the day of the verdict in the Scott Peterson murder trial in California, where they cheered the jurors who found Peterson guilty of killing his wife and unborn child and jeered the Peterson family.

Some waited there for hours, and for what? To get close to people in the news, to feel part of a story, to speak their mind about it.

So it is with Newton and some of the others who have left messages on Waterman's live journal site. A poster named mr. twisty had this to say: "An LJ killer! Cool as f---.''

For all of the mr. twisty's out there, however, there are people making comments on the journal because they have ties to Waterman, her family or her town. It can't be easy for them to read messages from people who think it's cool to comment on journal entries written by a murder suspect.

One poster goes by the name "usanightmare,'' who once lived in Craig, according to a posting. As the comments kept pouring in, he or she was feeling cynical about how the journal had turned into a free-for-all:

" 'Posting In A Legendary Thread'? This isn't a legend, its a sad tragedy, because this is a no win situation for all involved. How many people posting in this thread actually knew the people involved directly? Now that this has become some sort of "internet legend", people who have nothing at all to do with the family, the city, even the state are posting because its amusing to them. ...''

It's one thing to read Rachelle Waterman's journal thinking you may gain some insight as to why she may have done what police say she did. Some may see clues when Waterman complains that she was grounded for scoring an 89 on a test or that her mom wanted to send her to a fat farm.

Some may see red flags when they read a poem called "Ode to Suicide.'' Some may be alarmed by information in her user profile, in which she lists her hometown as "Hell, Alaska, United States,'' or by the name of her journal, which is "My Crappy Life -- The Inside Look of an Insane Life.''

But many of the thoughts and words found in Waterman's journal aren't terribly different from the thoughts and words of other teenagers.

Until you read that final entry.

wow, people are going a tad bit psycho over there,

what she did was a horrible, evil thing. But I went back a few pages reading her entry and trying to see if there was anything actually to it. People wre commenting to posts she made months ago, like the same people. Over and over again.

I really wanna know what they're getting out of this, they're like laughing and making jokes about it.

I swear, those people are almost as twisted as that girl is.
