Dairy Foods Burns Fat

DAIRY DIET

Reporter: Natalie Bonjolo

In the battle of the bulge it's usually dairy that's dumped. Cheeses, yogurt, milk - all delicious, all sinful. Or so you think?

But according to dietician Nikki Cummings from Curtin University new research turns that idea upside.

Dairy could actually help you lose weight by burning more fat.

“We're trying to show a link between dairy calcium and helping people actually burn more fat,” Nikki said.

Head of the research team, Dr Mario Soares, explains that while calcium has an effect, it was high calcium from dairy which had an even greater effect.

“The calcium triggers off a sequence of events which actually stimulates the enzymes which break down stored fat and prevents the enzymes which lay down fat from working,” Dr Soares said.

The Perth trial hopes to prove in the lab, what research on diets has uncovered in the United States.

Dr Michael Zemmel is head of the Nutrition Institute of Tennessee.

He says that when overweight adults were put on a low fat, but high dairy diet they lost twice as much weight as a second group who ate the same amount of calories but no dairy.

“Our findings show if you’re cutting calories you can make that effort twice as effective by incorporating three serves of dairy into your daily diet,” Dr Zemmel said.

“One of the key findings of this study is that dairy is especially helpful in helping reduce fat in your mid-section, in your abdomen region.”

Dairy Australia is pinning their hopes on the results of the Perth research to explode the myth that dairy makes you fat.

Yeah we are learning about this in nutrition class. They are really learning that calcium is not only important for healthy bones and preventing osteperosis, but aids in weight loss.

I don't think I'm lactose intolerant since I can eat dairy foods and I loooove cheese. But milk gives me a slight stomache if I drink too much at one time. So yeah, good thing I don't need to lose weight.

There are different stages of lactose intolerance, I myself am not fully lactose intolerant because I can have maybe a slice of cheese every 2 weeks but if I have any more then that I most likely get really sick. I also can't have more then 2 ounces of chocolate before I get so horrably sick that I can't get out of bed for an entire day.

That's horrible!

Reminds me of ppl with severe peanut allergies....so much that they died cuz someone used a knife that was used to spread peanut butter to spread jam or something on their toast. That was a horrible shocker.

Ever since I started drinking no fat skim milk, I've noticed that my tummy has been slimming down and I've been drinking it over a year or so now.

I too am lactose intollerant, but skim milk doesn't bother me at all. Now I'm drinking chocolate milk because Manitoba Milk Producers are running a contest (open a carton of milk and if it moo's you win a prize- there's no milk in the actual winning carton but a moo sounding thing)

Awesome! I'm glad that milk has an added plus side to it besides more calcium. I hate 2% milk, it's so creamy and gross. Bleah.
