Dad Faces Charges After Two-Year-Old Daughter Got Drunk
By The Associated Press
(9/15/04 - FAIRFIELD, NY) — A central New York man faces child endangerment charges after his two-year-old daughter got drunk.

State police say the girl was treated Sunday at a hospital for a blood alcohol level of .14 -- nearly twice the legal limit for an adult.
Troopers say Eric Carney of Little Falls was at a friend's house when he gave his daughter a taste of beer. He says she probably drank more on her own while he wasn't looking.

When he returned the toddler to her mother, she noticed that something was wrong. She took the girl to Little Falls Hospital, where doctors determined the child was intoxicated.

The girl was treated and released into the care of her mother. Trooper say an order of protection has been issued against Carney to keep him away from his daughter.

That is so wrong. What kind of person gives a child alcohol? I mean really, at least have some common sense.

Ok...I can kind of understand. It might sound bad, I know. But I used to steal drinks of beer when I was around 2, and my parents would give me little sips and stuff. My dad told me one time I stole one and drank too much of it and got sick. I don't think it makes my parents neglectful or abusive. And when I got older, them letting me taste things, or have wine when I was a teenager and stuff helped I think because it took away the mystery and I didn't go crazy binge drinking like a lot of other students when I got to college.

A child's body can't handle alcohol like an adult's body. Smaller bodies in general have a hard time absorbing the alcohol. Factor in that a child's body is still growing, and it makes it even worse. Even giving what a parent thinks is just a little will make the child really sick.

I do think this is a form of child endangerment. Adults can die from drinking too much and their bodies have a greater capacity of handling alcohol. Is this parent naive enough to believe that this wouldn't hurt her? And why wasn't somone watching her at all times in the first place?

i can see your point, but a 2 year old ?

thats a little too much i think, yeah, letting a 12 year old have a sip of beer/wine, yeah, fine, their bodies will cope with it a lot better, a 2 year olds body isnt going to be able to cope with any alcohol ingestion.

Hopefully her mother is a little more responsible...

my grandpa gave me a sip of beer when i was like three or four. i still remember how bad i thought it tasted. and i didn't really feel the urge to go out and get drunk everynight or just go crazy when i grew up. and to this day i still don't like the way beer tastes. so i can't really blame the father for giving his daughter a sip, but i do think he should've been watching her better to stop this from happening. but if kids want something they'll do just about anything to get it.

I agree. A little sip is fine just to let her taste it but he should watch her and not have the beer within her reach after.

I agree with you. I think it's good to de-mystify alcohol as kids grow up so that they don't feel the need to go crazy and binge drink and stuff. I'm not saying it's a foolproof plan but I think it helps make kids view alcohol in a more sensible way.

I don't think giving her a sip was a bad idea but having said that he definitely should have kept an eye on her and made sure she couldn't get her hands on anymore. Does sound like he wasn't very responsible about it - especially given he didn't seem to notice that there was something wrong with her

Yep, ITA...I don't see the fact that he gave her a sip as the major problem, but that he wasn't watching her properly in an environment where she had access to alcohol is the real issue.

.14 is a pretty high level - the guy obviously wasn't watching her properly but as for letting kids have a sip i don't see the problem - I come from a part greek background where most kids are given a little bit of wine mixed with water at family dinners and in my experience it means that kids don't get to 16 and decide to go binge drinking cause alcohol just dosen't seem like that big of a deal when its always been a part of your life.

There was this time when I was about 6 I was having a pretend tea party at my next door neighbours house and we decided to fill our cups from her dad's beer keg - we didn't really know what it was just that it was a drink. It must have tasted awful cause it wasn't even fully fermented! I think that my mum got a shock when i got home and realised that I was tipsy! The guy was pretty irresponsible in leaving the keg where we could reach it.

It's typical for kids to taste a sip of beer from their parents cup. But at 2 years old?!
