I think D-day was amazing and while that doesn't sound right I don't know any other way to put it. I was in Normandy last summer and saw Omaha and Gold beaches. They are amazingly long, a good half mile from the shore to the start of the cliff and then they had to climb. The soldiers that were involved in that battle are true heroes. The fought against the odds and they won. It's amazing.

D-Day marked the true turning point of World War II, and the soldiers and sailors who participated in this battle truly were heroes.

the german chancelor said today that it wasn't a loss for germany but that we actually won. this is so true. there have been documentaries on tv all day. just to imagine what these soldiers had to go through - how terrifying that must've been.
all those who lost their lives during that war - rest in peace.

I spent the whole day in Paris, watching all the festivities and commemoration on a giant screen. The emotion everyone felt during the tribute to all the soldiers and resistance fighters who died during that longest day ever was pretty much intense. There was a pair of Americans by my age near my group of friends and everyone was teary.

It felt good to see veterans from both sides (the winners and the losers) share their experience, feeling no animosity towards each other.

Did Schroder say that? We've had little here about it, its all Reagen. (in Aus)

I think that's a wonderful statement of him to make. And so true.

Short version of D-Day, is the day that the Allies made their landing in "Fortress Europa" to try and get back the continent of Europe, which was being occupied by Adolph Hitler. I think (and correct me if I'm wrong) D-day stands for delivery day?

D-Day is a military term, just like H-Hour, where the letters D and H don't design a word but a date.

The terms D-day and H-hour are used for the day and hour on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated. They designate the day and hour of the operation when the day and hour have not yet been determined, or where secrecy is essential. The letters are derived from the words for which they stand, "D" for the day of the invasion and "H" for the hour operations actually begin. There is but one D-day and one H-hour for all units participating in a given operation. It is unnecessary to state that H-hour is on D-day.

When used in combination with figures and plus or minus signs, these terms indicate the length of time preceding or following a specific action. Thus, H-3 means 3 hours before H-hour, and D+3 means 3 days after D-day. H+75 minutes means H-hour plus 1 hour and 15 minutes.

In non-English speaking countries, the system is the same, but the letter change in function of how is said that word 'day'. Like in France, D-Day can be translated into Jour-J.

For those that do not really know what D-day is, to get a feel of what it might have been like for those soldiers. Rent/buy Saving Private Ryan, a new 60th anniversry is out.

The first 10-15 minutes of that movie..man.

The veterans should be honored. They are the true heroes of the world. They saved the world from a dictator. They are the stories of legends.
