Mother sues Cornell fraternity over 'hazing' death

The mother of a US student who died after drinking at a fraternity house is suing the group for $25m (£15m), saying her son was "hazed" and left to die.

Marie Lourdes Andre claims her 19-year-old son, George Desdunes, was bound and forced to drink alcohol at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity house.

Mr Desdunes, of Cornell University in New York state, was allegedly kidnapped as part of a ritual.

He was found unresponsive the next day and later died in hospital.

Mr Desdunes, a human ecology student, was allegedly tied up by his wrists and ankles with zip ties and duct tape, quizzed on SAE history and forced to consume large amounts of alcohol until he passed out, according to the lawsuit.

The victim was then left to die on a couch at the fraternity house, according to court documents filed in New York state's Kings Country Supreme Court.

Mr Desdunes was unresponsive when he was found by Cornell University staff the following day, with an alcohol level of .409% - five times the legal limit for driving in New York state.

The lawsuit filed by his mother alleges that another student attempted to interfere with the crime scene by having the zip ties removed before police arrived.

"With the death of my son, I find some comfort in knowing that this lawsuit may bring about changes in fraternities that will prevent other families from suffering as I have," Ms Andre said.

Some former members, or pledges, of the fraternity were charged with first-degree hazing and unlawfully dealing with a child in connection with the death.

Cornell University "neither condones nor tolerates hazing or the type of activities that we understand contributed to George's death", said Tommy Bruce, a spokesman for Cornell.

Cornell has since withdrawn recognition of the SAE fraternity.

I don't know if the lady's lawsuit has merits.

But I do think that a suspicious death like that should be thoroughly investigated and, if it so happens that someone tried to tamper with the crime scene before police could investigate, I hope they nail that person to the wall.

Personally, I find that hazing, whatever the circumstances, should be outlawed. But I have heard the practice defended as community building, or whatever. I don't buy it personally, and this story kinda proves my point, I think.

I think I would need more info before I could make an opinion, but I feel for the mother.

I feel for the mother, too.

I just think there's a bigger issue at play here.

Well, for one thing, hazing has not place on a college "campus" (whether that fraternity was on-campus or off-campus, it belongs to the college).

Tristan Harold Lyons, 19, was arrested Friday.(Codiac RCMP)A New Brunswick man wanted in connection with an attempted murder in Moncton has been arrested, police say.
Tristan Harold Lyons, 19, was arrested outside a Moncton motel Friday afternoon, RCMP said.
A warrant for his arrest was issued Wednesday in connection with a home invasion and attempted murder on June 24. Lyons also faces breaking and entering and firearms related charges.
A woman, 25, was also arrested for helping Lyons to escape.
Both are scheduled to appear in Moncton provincial court next week.

I hope if he is guilty he gets convicted.

If he's not guilty, I don't know what they could possibly have on the woman who helped him "escape."

But, yeah, if he is guilty, I hope he is convicted.

Casey Anthony: Toddler death jury considers verdict

The jury in the murder trial of a US single mother, Casey Anthony, has been sent out to consider its verdict.

Seven women and five men will consider whether Ms Anthony is guilty of first-degree murder in the death of her two-year-old daughter, Caylee.

If found guilty, the 25-year-old could receive the death penalty or a life sentence. She denies all seven charges.

The case has gripped the US since the toddler from Orlando, Florida, disappeared in June 2008.

Caylee's skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area about one-quarter of a mile from the family home, six months after she was last seen.

After the court sat through the weekend and into the US national holiday of 4th July, lawyers finished their closing arguments on Monday morning.

Prosecutors say Ms Anthony suffocated Caylee with duct tape because the girl got in the way of her love life and partying.

They said she lied to her parents about her daughter's whereabouts after the toddler disappeared in June 2008, saying she was with a nanny.

Prosecutor Linda Burdick said to the jury: "At the end of this case all you have to ask yourself is whose life was better without Caylee?"

Showing the jury two photographs, one of Ms Anthony apparently attending a party and the other of a tattoo "Bella Vita" she had inscribed on her shoulder, Ms Burdick said: "This is your answer."

Fake father

But Ms Anthony's defence team say the girl accidentally drowned in the family pool.

They say she and her father George panicked and dumped the body to make the death look like a murder. Mr Anthony, a retired police officer, has denied this happened.

Defence lawyer Jose Baez said the elaborate lies his client had told her parents and the police was due to her dysfunctional upbringing and did not make her a killer, he told the jurors.

Casey Anthony declined to testify at the trial.

Other charges include aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child and giving false information to police.

Yeah... I literally have no opinion here. Opinions about this case have been so loud and so one-sided (as near as I can see) that I can't make up my mind, It's obviously a very emotional case, so no wonder people have strong opinions...

But I'm just not sure what kind of evidence they're basing themselves on here. Nor have I really paid that close attention, I must say. I've heard bits and pieces over the years, and all of it was about how such a party girl clearly had it in for her daughter.

Which, hey, could be very true. It obviously looks bad for her. But I haven't heard much about actual evidence.

This is the thing that I can't handle is - if the the parents are innocent this is hell on earth for them. Their child is dead and they are being accused of doing it. If they are guilty - the thought that adults could kill kids is horrific enough, but to kill your own; hard to think about.

Casey Anthony found not guilty. Guilty of only providing false information to the police regarding the death of her daughter.

Well, now I know that if I ever want to kill my kids, I should just move to Florida.
