| Coup in Thailand Yesterday, thailands military and police have overthrown caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a bloodless coup. If that's a curse or a blessing will be seen - now they have to prove their intent. The time has been their friend - while the whole coup took place, PM Thaksin was abroads in the U.S. I have read some reviews from people who live in Thailand, and they all seem to be happy about the new situation. Apparently Thaksin wasn't very popular. If you want some qualified news, try f.e. the Bangkok Post __________________

| I heard - it shocked me. I didn't realise Thailand was so instable as to have a coup. I mean, I know Thailand has had military coups in the past, but it seems something that's really, well, drastic. Thaksin has been on the edge for a long while now. Corruption, ineptitude with the Musilm south...it had been coming since April, I heard. I wonder why he didn't do anything though. Thanksin is popular in the countryside, actaually, but not in Bangkok. And the Muslim south of course. He says he's still the PM - but with the coup leader saying there'll be a new PM within two weeks, I don't know how much merit his statement holds. Well, it should be interesting. I think people should be glad though that it's been peaceful so far (this has to do with the King, right?) still, better for those inside to get out as soon as they can. Things have a habit of turning nasty, if history is anything to go by. __________________ go easy on me, I can't help what I'm doing | icon | |||
