Corey Haim Dead After Apparent Accidental Drug Overdose

Actor Corey Haim died from an apparent accidental drug overdose after he was rushed to a Los Angeles County hospital early this morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Haim, 38, was taken from his mother's North Hollywood home by ambulance to Burbank's Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, according to police Sgt. Frank Albarran.

He was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. PT, Ed Winter, the assistant chief of the L.A. County Department of Coroner, said.

"He got out of bed about 1:30 this morning, was a little unsteady on his feet," Winter said. Haim's mother then called the paramedics.

Haim's mother said her son had been suffering from "flu-like symptoms," Winter said, adding that four prescription pill bottles were found in the apartment but no illicit drugs.

What sad news. But what do you expect is going to happen when you take drugs?

Not surprised. The guy had drug problems for years. It still is too bad because unlike the majority of the teeny bop talent of today both him and Feldman actually had some decent acting chops. He was great in Lucas, The Lost Boys, Liscence to Drive, and Dream a Little Dream.

From the sounds of things, it looks like he had a pretty solid attempt at a ligitimate comeback planned. I guess we'll never know now.

Well, that's just the thing, according to his agent, he'd been clean for over a year now:

Quote:
Corey Haim’s agent tells People.com that he doesn’t believe the actor’s death was caused by an overdose. “He was doing really well,” Mark Heaslip tells People. “He did struggle with substance abuse, but I’ve repped him for a year-and-a-half and part of my agreement with him was that he had to be clean. That was the number one priority.” Heaslip also notes that Haim’s was suffering from a fever and flu-like symptoms in the hours before his death. Heaslip has not yet returned phone calls from EW.

Personally, I'm rather hoping this is true, if for no other reason than to quiet the really nasty comments some people have been making online. What's being spewed online right now is really, really disturbing.

I mean, when a person has stopped breathing, don't people have to, I don't know, be respectful and remember that he was someone's son?

RIP Cory So young. I really hope it's not the drugs that killed him.

The L.A. Coroner’s Office confirms that Corey Haim’s autopsy was completed earlier today. But don’t expect any results yet — According to the chief coroner investigator, “The cause of death has been deferred pending receipt of toxicology and histopathology tests.” The office expects to get results in six to eight weeks.

UPDATE: According to Access Hollywood, Haim’s mother — Judy Haim — says the coroner’s office called her to disclose the actor’s cause of death. She claims she was told the autopsy found the actor suffered pulmonary congestion, and found he had an enlarged heart and water in his lungs.

So it seems that maybe, just maybe, Mr Haim didn't die of an overdose.

Not that relapses don't happen.

But, here's to all the people who rushed to judgment on this one.

But water in the lungs and enlarged heart is very unusual for a young person. I wonder what brought all that on? So sad.

It is unusual, but it's not unheard of either.

And, you know, if he was taking drugs (prescribed or not), that might have contributed to his death in this way. Even if he had stopped taking drugs, it may just be that his body had been damaged to such an extent that this was inevitable.

It may just be that, when he was battling his demons, he set a wheel in motion.

I know that often when someone starts taking legit prescription drugs, it's so easy to get addicted, then it turns into having to get the drugs illegally.

And it's not like the guy didn't already have a history of drug addiction to begin with. So whether he died because he was back to using or because he had used for so long that his body was shot... it seems that that's what killed him in the end.

I still think it's sad.

Hundreds gather in Toronto for Haim's funeral

Hundreds of people packed into a Toronto chapel Tuesday to say goodbye to Hollywood actor Corey Haim, who died last week in Los Angeles.

The 38-year-old Toronto native was found last Wednesday, unresponsive in his mother's apartment, and was later pronounced dead from an enlarged heart and pulmonary congestion. Haim was recently suffering from flu-like symptoms, and police suspect the former teen idol, who has been struggling with drug addiction for years may have had an overdose.

A coroner's report has yet to be released to determine if prescription drugs may have contributed to his sudden death.

Maytal Kotler, a second cousin of Haim's, described the service Tuesday as a "touching" affair.

"There was laughter, there was crying," she said, her eyes welling up with tears. "He was a good soul. A very fun, loving guy with a big heart."

Kotler said Haim's mother Judy, father Bernie, cousins and aunts were all in attendance.

Jennifer Matton didn't know Haim personally but drove nine hours from Philadelphia to stand outside the chapel to bid her teenage crush goodbye.

"He was just someone who fell on hard times," said Matton, an emergency room nurse. "That's what people need to remember."

Matton said she has been a fan of Haim's since she was 14 years old. "Inever met him but I think coming here today will give me closure," she said.

Haim became an instant heartthrob in the 1980s after rocketing to fame after his role in the cult classic, the Lost Boys.

He also starred in films such as License to Drive, Lucas and more recently, the Two Coreys, a reality show about his lifelong friendship with frequent co-star Corey Feldman. Feldman issued a statement prior to the service that he was not going to attend out of respect for the family.

"You (should) also know the only reason I am truly not there is out of respect for your mother and her wishes to minimize the media attention as much as possible," he wrote in a letter to Haim on his blog Tuesday. "I want your family to have a calm peaceful day. Hopefully we will not see one shot of the funeral on the news. Just know I am at home today projecting positive energy for you and your passing."

Tuesday's ceremony was paid for with donations by Haim's friends, fans and the chapel despite earlier reports that the City of Toronto was going to be footing the bill.

Haim was buried in a cemetery north of Toronto following the service.

A public memorial is being planned in Los Angeles in the coming days. Details have yet to be released.

Meanwhile, prosecutors in California announced last week that they were investigating a possible link between Haim and an illegal prescription drug ring.

State Attorney General Jerry Brown's office said an unauthorized prescription under Haim's name was found during an ongoing investigation of bogus prescription drug forms ordered from a San Diego supplier.

So I guess that's that.

They reported on this on the local news. Man, some people drove up from Philadelphia to be here! I am apparently too young to have fully understood how much this man impacted a generation of then-teens.

Coroner discovers Corey Haim did not die from drug use

According to People, the coroner assigned to Corey Haim’s death found that drugs did not contribute to the actor’s tragic March 10 death. Instead, Haim was found to have passed away from “damage to the air sacs in his lungs, pneumonia, and a hardening of his heart muscle with plaque build-up within the blood vessels.” The actor had been suffering flu-like symptoms prior to collapsing in his mother’s L.A. apartment.

So, not a drug overdose.

Seems like the rest of it might be related to years of drugs use, though. So, you know, let that be a lesson or whatever.
