Do we think she is a good choice? Is there anyone you would prefer?

I was quite offended at her branding the tsunami a "wonderful oppurtunity" for the US to build goodwll among Muslim nations - Sen. Boxer rightfully pointed out the insensitivity of such a remark.

I think That Rice is as qualified as anyone..She is much more hawkish than powell however..dont know how I feel about that..

And while the comment 'Oppurtunity' was insensitive, she was correct in those regards.

I don't think so, I admire Rice and I don't think what she said was insensitive. She was not saying that the tsunami was wonderful, nor was she implying that she thinks the death tolls are anything but tragic. All she was saying is that a catasrophic event like this is a good oportunity to show these countries that we are anxious to help out in their time of need.

Senator Boxer had her pretty much shaken up by her questions and Rice took it way too personally. BTW Rice still never explained her 'mushroom cloud over the US' comment prior to the Iraq War.

The tsunami comment was too insensitive. The Department of State is supposed to be all about diplomacy. Right now she's a very poor example of a US diplomat. But that doesn't mean she won't be confirmed of course.

I hate her. She's one of the politicians that I hate the most. And I don't hate her because she's a Republican. She could be a Democrat and I'd still hate her. I think she's horrible.

I think she has the intelligence but I don't know if she has the brash attitude and strength that is required for such a position. I do hope that she does well though and I guess we'll find out when we see her in action.

I think she's frightening. I remember watching Wanda Sykes imitating her on tv once a few years ago; she was bugging her eyes out and everything, and I thought, "That's EXACTLY her!"

I really like her a lot. I remember watching her at the 9/11 Commission hearings and liked her responses. When some senators were hounding her and asking for yes/no answers I liked how she said that no, she would not be giving yes/no answers, but was going to explain her answers. Anyways ff they wanted yes/no answers they might as well have had her fill out a scantron and not spent taxpayers money on that. She really impressed me there.

I also like the fact that she is a minority. It's good to see minorities in such high positions, although I did read somewhere that some people don't think she is "black enough" whatever that means. See my avatar.

You are right, she should have just sat there and let Boxer called her a liar. I do not care who you are and what position you have - anyone has the right to take it personally when someone else attacks their integrity. Barbara Boxer has an axid to grind and will use any format to display that.

I am glad to see Condoleezza get this position. I think she will be even more beneficial in this role.

The reason she didn't give yes/no answers was so that she didn't have to give a straight answer, period.

An axe to grind? I'm not too familiar with Sen. Boxer's past record beyond the most relevent (Iraq, Ohio etc) - what axe does she have to grind.

I was just reading the transcripts and have to say, my admiration for Sen. Boxer has increased vastly. I think she stated her points eloquently and with great passion.

My personal opinon on Dr Rice - I admire her for making a success of herself and gaining her position. However, I'm not sure she is the best suited candidate for the job. Powell was respected by other nations - he appeared level headed and ready to build relationships with people, despite the events of the past few years. Rice doesn't have that reputation. Maybe she will earn it but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I personally don't like the choice. But Bush is president, might as well go all out on the craziness.

Called her a liar? Please...the main rationale for going to war with Iraq was the threat of WMD. Boxer is right...Congress voted on whether to go to war based on WMD not Saddam's tyranny, bringing democracy to the Iraqis and whatever other reason Bush can think up since there weren't any WMD.

No matter how the supporters of this war like to play revionist history about why the US made this pre-emptive strike it doesn't change the fact Bush, Rice and all of them tap dance around that question. All Boxer did was ask her to explain her own quotes and Rice could not do it. She played the victim and looked incredibly weak in the process. And yes..I saw the exchange live. We all know that accountability is a four letter word for this group.

I'm not sure what ax she has to grind either since I doubt Senator Boxer would ever want a job in the Bush Administration.

I think the Tsunami remark was insensitive. You are right when you say that she did not mean that the Tsunami was wonderful, however I find it pathetic that she thinks of the situation as a way to boost America's reputation or use it to our advantage. I know it is a harsh reality and it happens, it doesn't mean it's kind. Regardless of what Rice actually meant she still sounded insensitive.

Yes, but her reactions did not work to her advantage. Regardless of who was wrong and right. Most of what people judge comes from not what people are actually saying but how they say it. Rice seemed touchy.

Right now Powell would be great, because of his prescence in the areas hit by the tsunami. He seemed to be doing a good job there, representing America without making us seem exploitive - which is what I am afraid Rice woud do. To me she comes off as a woman who is powerful, indeed, but somebody who takes what they want with little thought to other parties involved.
