Coming Soon, Self-Cleaning Clothing - No Detergent Needed

By The Associated Press
(11/25/04 - COLUMBIA, S.C.) — Coming sometime to closets everywhere: "self-cleaning" clothing.

Clemson University researchers say they have created a coating that can be integrated into virtually any fabric, allowing dirt to be released when water is applied. No detergent needed. The patented coating allows clothing to be cleaned simply by spraying with water or wiping with a damp cloth. It reduces the number of cleanings required. The coating method could be sold to textile companies to be integrated into fabrics. How does it work? Researchers say the coating -- a polymer film mixed with tiny silver particles -- is infused into fabric. It creates a series of microscopic bumps that cause dirt and other substances to bounce off when water is applied. The loose thread in all this? Researchers say it'll probably be five years before the coating hits the market.

I can already feel my skin starting to itch just thinking about it.

Sounds a bit strange to me, but I'm messy, so I'd probably love it.

First you put these clothes on with this stuff all over it ..ewww..

Then you put it in water and hope it comes out clean and smelling fresh?

I think I'll rather scrub.

Huh. I'm bad enough about doing laundry already... so I can just imagine all the people that would take something off and put it back up "Oh, it'll clean itself!" This sounds weird.

Don't they have anything better they could be researching? Getting all of your clothing wet sounds even more work than just dumping them all in the washer to me.

Wouldn't the clothing still smell though? And besides, would anyone really want to replace the nice cozy fuzzy feeling of freshly dried laundry for a synthetic wash-away coating?
