Car driven on fire into Glasgow airport

BBC NEWS | Scotland | Car on fire crashes into airport

BREAKING NEWS

Car on fire crashes into airport

The car was ablaze before crashing into the building
A car on fire has been driven at the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport, police have confirmed.
Eyewitnesses have described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath.

They have also described seeing two Asian men, one of whom was on fire, who had been in the car.

The airport has been evacuated and all flights suspended following the incident at 1515 BST.

One eyewitness said: "I heard the sound of a car's wheels spinning and smoke coming out.

There was an Asian guy who was pulled out of the car by two police officers

Richard Gray
Eyewitness

"I saw a Jeep Cherokee apparently as if it was trying to get right through the doors into the terminal building.

"There were flames coming out from underneath then some men appeared from in amongst the flames.

"The police ran over and the people started fighting with the police. I then heard what sounded like an explosion."

Eye-witness Richard Gray told BBC News 24: "A green Jeep was in the middle of the doorway burning.

The incident happened 1515 BST on Saturday

"There was an Asian guy who was pulled out of the car by two police officers, who he was trying to fight off. They've got him on the ground.

"The car didn't actually explode. There were a few pops and bangs which presumably was the petrol."

Taxi driver Ian Crosby said: "This was no accident. This was a deliberate attack on Glasgow Airport."

The reaction of members of the public was not to help the men in the car, but to restrain them, he told the BBC.

Mr Crosby, who said he served in Northern Ireland, told how he shepherded people away from the scene in case of a secondary explosion or a nail-bomb.

Two men, one of whom was reported to be badly burned, were seen being led away in handcuffs

I really don't know what to say it's scary

The BBC is saying that one of the men resisted the police and a member of the public tackled him to the ground. I don't know what to think but it doesn't sound good at all.

If this is just an accident, it shows that this the terrorists are spooking us and people's instinct was to tackle these guys. Understandable but I'd resent letting these guys hold any power on us.

I don't think it was an accident. I would have ran in the opposiste direction if I was there, the people who tackled them to the ground are very brave, but I suppose it was just instinct for them at that moment.

I was just watching about this on TV. I think it was certainly done on purpose, this was no accident. I'm so glad no innocent bystanders were hurt in this. It seems people are intent on causing devastation in Britain this weekend.

A lot of the focus is on protecting London so much i think we forget about Britains other major cities and that there targets too.

They're saying on the news that this and the incidents in London might be connected. Might be?! Oh come on. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that it probably is. It's basically the same ammo which was a car set on fire.

The threat level for the UK has been raised to critical according to CNN and the BBC - that means attacks are expected imminently.

This is really, really scary. I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

Liverpool airport has been closed according to the BBC. Will stay closed until further notice. Other airports are being restricted.

Some US airports are increasing security according to AP.

I don't doubt we'll get through this drama but it does make you angry. There's about to be a police press conference about what happened.

From the press conference:

Police think it is linked to the London attack attempts. Treating it as a terrorist incident. Says there are clear similarities.

One of the men in the car was taken to hospital where a suspect deice was found on his person. Part of the hospital was cleared but is now reopen. The item (police wouldn't confirm or deny it was a suicide belt) was taken away.

Warning people to keep their eyes open for packages, cars etc that may be dangerous.

CNN is saying sources are telling them there is possibly a body left in the car which for some reason is still too unstable to approach. Could this mean explosives?
