Canadian iPod Users: Beware of the Government of Canada

I hope its ok that I post this because it is related to politics and just let me know if its not. I just want to see if any Canadians are around to talk about this. I want to talk about the fact of not being able to put music from a CD that I paid for onto my Ipod. Guess that even if I buy a CD, they are going to have it that it can't be ripped. I don't want to share it, just want it for my ipod

Quote:
The Government of Canada is out of touch with reality again. The Conservative bill recently introduced to Parliament seeks to bring Canada into the digital age through a number of unenforceable reforms affecting Apple iPod users in Canada. This is rather another waste of time in Ottawa that will likely bring no changes with respect to how people use their iPods.

The federal government seems to be very excited to bring the copyright law, which has not been updated in more than 10 years, into the 21st century by making changes that would make it illegal to copy a compact disc or DVD to a personal digital device such as an iPod – even if a consumer has already paid for the CD or DVD.

So I continued to read and saw that maybe I can rip. I'm

Quote:
The Bill C-61, introduced by Industry Minister Jim Prentice, would allow Canadian consumers to make a single copy of music they have legally acquired to each iPod they own, but they won’t be allowed to copy music they have borrowed or rented - nor would they be able to give away any copies

I think they're trying to prevent viral theft, or whatever it's called. But, like the article says, I don't see how it will be enforceable in any capacity.

Waste of tax payers money to upjold this. They could have given the money to the artists, or back into music programs in schools.

I guess the government has decided who owns the music, the artists. There is no way they can track everyone in the country.

Yep... They'll have to stop selling PVR/ipods and such and make portable VHS players...

The way I understand it, the bill allows for people to make copies of video or audio that they own to each device they own - so you can make a copy of a CD to play on your video iPod, or make a copy of a DVD to play it on your computer, and you can time shift and back up your media, just as you are allowed to now. You are not allowed to copy things you have rented or borrowed, you are not even supposed to do that now.

However, the main problem with this bill, and the part that was the most objectionable with the DMCA (the equivalent US law), is that it makes it illegal to bypass electronic copyright protection mechanisms, or Digital Rights Management (DRM) as it's called. The problem with that is that pretty much every DVD, many CDs and most audio/video that you can purchase from sites like iTunes has such protection. So that invalidates the part of the bill that makes it legal to make copies - in theory you're allowed, but in practice you can't because you'd have to do something illegal to make the copy.

One of the main groups organized against this bill is the Fair Copyright for Canada Facebook group, and there is a good collection of resources there to find out more. They've had almost 80,000 members join since the bill was first discussed, about half of which joined after the bill was introduced in the House on June 12.

One other important thing to note about this bill: the government claims that this bill is necessary to bring Canadian copyright law up to the World Intellectual Property Oversite (WIPO) international standards. But don't believe it - it goes far beyond what is required by WIPO, and is much closer to (and in some ways, worse than) the DMCA, as a result of pressure from the US.

The most worrisome part of all of this is that although the Liberal, NDP and Bloc are all likely to oppose this bill, they're not likely to be willing to bring down the government because of it. But this bill is very unpopular with the public, and for good reason.

Yah I agree. I cannot see this issue being a major concern to bring the government down. Canadians will debate anything to the death in the House.

Should be interesting to see what happens related to the government and if it brings it down or not. I'm just glad that my party is against it

I don't think it is sad that we are discussing this. In Canada we also debate Canadian TV and movies, who should fund them, or how Canadian should they be. It is important because we are talking the rights of consumers verus the rights of producers. Its sad that the debate continues for so long.
