Im happy with the ban. Its the way it should be. Marriage should be between a man and woman.
Please don't take this the wrong way but who says what "should" be the way of things?

I dont have any problems with gay/lesbians, you do what you gotta do, but the sanctaty(sp) of marriage should be kept sacred and thats only between a man and wife.

Apparently if you feel gays and lesbians shouldn't have the same rights as you do, just because you're straight, then you DO have a problem with them. It's no different than telling a black man he has to sit on the other side of the bus.

I think the worst of all of these props on the ballot was the gay adoption rights in Arkansas though. It makes me absolutely SICK.

I find that extremely unfortunate. Because children would REALLY be better off in foster homes or starving to death. It's just so mind-boggling, when you think about the message that sends to gay couples in Arkansas- that children are better off HOMELESS than with them. Really? Some people really and truly think that? Is that really what's best for the children that we have a responsibility to do everything in our power to take care of?

I used to think like you, Audrina, as many on this board who remember that far back can attest to. Four years ago I made the argument you are making, gave all the reasons you could think of, and argued against it until I was blue in the face. I've come a long way since then, and I now believe that if someone like me can change her mind on this, anyone can. I know that I'm learning and growing on a daily basis, but I can say now that if I believe something, I've done enough soul searching to know exactly why I believe it: not my parents, not my church, not even what society says that God believes, just me.

I'm not going to waste time and energy arguing this point with you because I know it would do less than no good. I remember that there was no way in hell I was going to be convinced by what someone else tried to make me understand. In fact, it just made me dig in my heals in harder. I had to come to it on my own, and I did. So my point here is not aimed towards Audrina, but to everyone else who desperately wanted this measure to fail. Don't give up hope on this. People are learning compassion, even if it's a slow process.

There was a time when California was at the forefront of progress in the United States, so the apparent ratification of Proposition 8 surprises and saddens me, and I'm truly appalled that gay adoption was banned in Arkansas. I would much prefer a child be raised by a loving couple that really wants that child instead of the alternative, and I'm disheartened that on a day that saw this country take such a positive step forward, that certain parts of this country took a huge step backwards.

I think the reason is that marriage and parenting have this old fashioned image. I know marriage is sacred but I am apathetic on both accounts. Right now the divorce rate is so high, I've seen SO many families suffer and break apart, we see celeb quickie marriages..marriage isn't even taking seriously anymore. If it were I could see it even had to be exclusive of other people but it seriously pains me that gay couples have to wait and wait just to make a committment while other couples go through a few marriages like clothes.

As for the parenting I think it's the everyone needs a mom and dad. This day though I'm not sure. I think of all the foster care kids with messed up families and parents..single parents..widowed parents...they have to fulfill two roles. Besides there are so many w/ two parents and that is okay but that doesn't mean both parents have a role in the kid's family..there might be neglect, abuse, abadonment..

I agree, the sanctity of heterosexual marriages should indeed be kept "sacred" (I don't like that word but it's the best one I can come up with). After all, the sanctity of Brittney Spear's shotgun 30-some hour Vegas wedding and Elizabeth Taylor's eight marriages, and all of the heterosexual couples in adulterous marriages would indeed be tarnished if same-sex couples were allowed to marry.
And, we also have a strong population need in this country, as well as on this earth. Allowing homosexual couples could potentially decrease the birth rate in this country and increase the number of children being adopted. This is a horrible thing that we cannot allow.
We can also not forget that God said Hate the sinner and the sin, an Christ, as a woman was about to be stoned in the streets, picked up a rock, threw it at her, and said, "Take that!" This is obviously a sign that all individuals have the right to judge other people's actions, especially when those actions don't interfere in someone's life. After all, who I marry, man or woman, has a direct impact upon your life, even if I don't know you.
And, there's also the fact that gays and lesbians made the choice to be that way. I mean, when I was six and on the playground and I looked at the little boys and the little girls, I chose at that moment to be heterosexual and prefer little boys over little girls which has led to me being heterosexual at this moment in time. I am so glad I made that decision. It should be easy for the gays and lesbians. They can just make the other choice.

So why, when their loved one, their partner of 20+ years is dying in the hospital, should same-sex partners be treated equally, as heterosexual couples are? Why, after death, should property and goods be divided amongst the family while ignoring the same-sex partner that cared for the deceased for the past thirty years? Why, for a same-sex couple, should health care benefits apply as they would for a heterosexual couple since that obviously is not a form of discrimination?

Based on all of this, I understand completely why marriage should be between a man and a woman...I'm going to go lie down in a ditch and let the stupid wash over me.

im really pissed off that prop 8 passed here in california im sorry but if you voted for prop 8

you voted for inequality

you voted for discrimination

you voted for hate

im sorry im just really dissapointed right now. i know a lot of gay people and they dont deserve to have their rights to get married taken away just because some people are too closed minded to accept it. seriously if someone here voted yes on 8 can u PLEASE explain to me why you would support that proposition. seriously, call me stupid but i just dont get it and dont give me that religious BS that God only wants a woman to marry a man. i may not be the most religious person out there but didnt God create all living things? and arent priests always preaching how God will love you and accept you no matter what? like someone in here said, being gay is NOT a choice. telling a gay person to become straight is the same as telling a straight person to become gay. not so easy, is it? those who voted yes on 8, dont try to justify your decision by saying you did it to "protect marriage" or the even more retarded reason "because i dont want my kids to learn about gay marriages in school" (dont even get me started on that one) you did it because you are intolerant towards a different lifestyle than yours and you just cant accept it and what's worse is that it doesnt even affect you in any way. if you have a gay friend and you voted yes on 8, you basically just slapped them across the face and told them they have no rights. im sorry for the long rant im just in the mood to argue

I know so many people who don't 'understand' how their children or their friends can be gay. It just doesn't seem to compute. But they voted No on Prop 8 anyway. Because they love and support their loved one. And they want them to have the same rights as anyone else in this country. That truly sets them apart from the 4 million people who couldn't care less about someone else's rights, as long as they have their own.

In the end, it is not a marriage issue, it is a civil rights issue. Using the sanctity of marriage and all it's religious meanings is an excuse. It's a way of expressing intolerance, plain and simple. No different than making an African American use a different water fountain than a white person. We pride ourselves, especially after this historic election, on being progressive. Is it going to take another forty years?

How will letting two people of the same sex marry, ruin the sanctity of marriage? Marriage is about love and commitment. Are same sex couples not capable of that?

Maybe so, but right NOW kids in Arkansas are missing out on willing homes just because the would-be parents are gay, and that's very sad. Yes, maybe in 20 years this will change, but it's hurting people right now.

I cant see how we have a right to call ourselves world leaders when were lagging behind the rest of the developed world. Europe have had women running their countries for a long time, they allow same sex couples to marry and they'd probably find the idea of revoking that right ridiculous. We cant call ourselves a world leader, when were lagging so far behind. The other developed countries realised running a nation based on religion doesn't work a long time ago, when are we gonna wake up and join the rest of the world?
