CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — A middle school principal has been charged with offering a 14-year-old student money to disrobe in his office.

Authorities said Tuesday that Pyne Point Middle School principal Daniel L. Edwards, 55, approached the boy three times this month and asked him to remove various articles of clothing.

The boy, authorities said, never complied. But last Friday, he hid a tape recorder in his shirt pocket and recorded the principal offering him money to undress in his office, authorities said.

The Camden school district suspended Edwards with pay.

Edwards, who lives in Pennsauken, was being held on $35,000 bail in the Camden County Jail on charges of endangering the welfare of a child and official misconduct.

Each charge carries a 10-year prison sentence.

School officials said Edwards had no history of problems.

"I'm just in total shock," said Philip E. Freeman Sr., the president of the Camden Board of Education. "I've known Mr. Edwards to be an outstanding principal."

Edwards' lawyer, Wayne Powell, did not immediately return a call to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

I don't see why he is "suspended with pay." He was caught on tape! He should be outright fired!

Good for the kid for being smarter than he thought, too.

He should be fired, but for some reason maybe they received legal advice not to until the police investigation is complete? To me its a slam dunk, he should be fired forthwith and given no bail. Paedophiles should never be given bail.

That kid was smart! Big time! At least he got evidence to prove that the principal was a pedophile...or at least in my opinion.

Why the bastard wasn't fired and only suspended with pay is what ticks me off. The should have fired him. I tell you...teachers, principals, bosses, they like to see what's underneath their children's clothing these days. No wonder society's corrupted.

Great thinking by the boy! It is terrifying that this kind of thing goes on. But I guess there have always been sick people in the world -- only now they are being punished for their actions.

There is probably a legal reason why he wasn't sacked. Maybe they have to wait until he is formally charged with something. But, I do think he should have been suspended without pay. If he is cleared -- although it is unlikely -- give him the pay he missed out on, but it seems wrong to still be paying this man.

I believe it has something to do with him being charged. If they fire him before it's official he's being tried I think he can sue for being fired for unright reasons or something.

If he did not record it he would of been branded as a liar and a troubled youth, and the principal would of been made out as an innocent victim.

That Boy did the right thing and hopefully justice prevails and the principal gets a long time in the big house.

I also hope the boy gets some counselling, as he probably will need it. I wish him well.

That boy is very intelligent and I admire the way he handled the situation. It was actually very adult, since he didn't go running to everybody else and solved his problems efficiently on his own. That's very rare and I wish him the best after having to go through that.

Yeah, hopefully he will not be tarnished in any way after having to go through this - as for the sick B@strd he should have been fired, put in jail - not suspended ON PAY!!!

All the outrage over the punishment begs one question: you are aware this is probably an initial step? The story probably broke at the first opportunity, before any criminal proceedings have begun, and before an official investigation can conclude. As much as we may/may not like it the guy does get a fair and impartial hearing where all the facts will be presented. Only after that will he be fired (in the school board investigation) or jailed (in the criminal proceedings). Before any punishment is made, there has to be a trial - it's the bedrock of our system.

yeah that whole suspended with pay is ridiculous..........he asked a student to undress for money.........more than once..........and the student caught it on tape..........what more does the district need..........video.........come on people ...........sometimes people just dont........I dont even know what to say
