Bombing at Iraqi parliament kills 8

Quote:
A suspected suicide bomber blew himself up in the Iraqi parliament cafeteria in a stunning assault in the heart of the heavily fortified, U.S.-protected Green Zone Thursday, killing at least eight people, the American military spokesman said.

Maj. Gen. William Caldwell told Associated Press Broadcast that eight people were killed in the attack. Iraqi officials said the bomber struck the cafeteria while several lawmakers were eating lunch, killing three of them. State television reported as many as 30 wounded.

The blast in the parliament building came hours after a suicide truck bomb exploded on a major bridge in Baghdad, collapsing the steel structure and sending cars tumbling into the Tigris River, police and witnesses said. At least 10 people were killed.

After the blast, security guards sealed the building and no one — including lawmakers — was allowed to enter or leave.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad said no Americans were hurt in the blast.

The bombing came amid the two-month-old security crackdown in Baghdad, which has sought to restore stability in the capital so that the government of
Iraq can take key political steps by June 30 or face a withdrawal of American support.

So much for a secure green zone and a security crackdown. If the insurgents can strike inside Parliament....I mean man, how would we react if bombers reached Congress or the House of Parliament?

Its nuts. One of the pundits on the news was speculating that perhaps it was an inside job i.e. someone inside the security forces provided the bomber with the ID and method of getting in.

Apparently so.

From the Lexis's link:
Quote:
Security officials at parliament, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information, said they believed the bomber was a bodyguard of a Sunni member of parliament who was not among the dead. They would not name the member of parliament.

Reminds me of the second assassination attempt perpetrated on Kwame Nkruma, Ghana's first president post-independence. His bodyguard shot five times directly at him as he was leaving his office. Of course, in this instance, the bodyguard missed all five times...

Makes you wonder if this mess can ever be put to rights, though.

I don't want to get off topic, but are you familiar with the account of the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand? The story always made us laugh (inappropriately, obviously) in history class, because although they succeeded, they were the most inept group of assassins.

I am also familiar with that assassination. It just so happens that I just finished a class on the last two centuries of European history, so that one figured prominently, for obvious reasons.
