Obama went to church today, it actually made news since so many are now thinking he's a Muslim. Hopefully people will start realizing he's just a Christian who doesn't go to church each week.

I don't anyone actually believe he's a Muslim anymore than people really thought George W Bush is a devout man. It's just a way to attach an easy label to explain why you like or don't like some. Prevents people from having to form complicated thoughts, especially when most people don't really care about what goes on in their country or in the world at large, so long as they're not affected directly by it.

There are a few people I work with who actually believe he's a Muslim. On that note, those same people don't believe he's an American...I don't bother correcting them. Waste of time.

TFTNT love the title

Sunny, I think you are right that people think Obama is a Muslim mostly bc they won't (or can't?) think more complex political thoughts. But it might also be a form of racism. He doesn't look like a WASP, and therefore people assume that he is not like them that he is with "the others"

Chellie, I love your signature

Obama pledges revamp of foreign aid policy

President Barack Obama has told the UN a revamped US foreign aid policy will help lift nations out of poverty by focusing on good governance and encouraging trade and investment.

Mr Obama told the UN summit in New York on the Millennium Development Goals that the focus should be on development, not dependence.

But he insisted helping poor nations was in the US national interest.

He said the US would do its part to help lift millions out of poverty.

But with five years left to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), Mr Obama said the world "must do better".

'Instability'

The eight MDGs were adopted in 2000, and include improving health care, increasing access to education and promoting equal rights for women.

"If the international community just keeps doing the same things the same way, we will miss many development goals," Mr Obama said.

He said it was in America's, and other rich nations', interests to help the world's poorer countries, despite the economic downturn.

"In our global economy, progress in even the poorest countries can advance the prosperity and security of people far beyond their borders, including my fellow Americans."

He said: "When millions of fathers cannot provide for their families, it feeds the despair that can fuel instability and violent extremism."

He announced a new focus in US aid on moving beyond providing assistance to offering "nations and peoples a path out of poverty".

This would be done by working with co-operative nations to develop their economies over the long term.

Countries that were willing to create attractive environments for investment and trade would be helped, Mr Obama said.

He also said democracy and good governance would be encouraged and corruption fought.

"We know that countries are more likely to prosper when governments are accountable to their people. So we are leading a global effort to combat corruption.

"We will reach out to countries making the transition from authoritarianism to democracy, and from war to peace. The people of Liberia show that even after years of war, great progress can be achieved," Mr Obama added.

BBC diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus says this was a restrained, even humble speech, suggesting an America that wants to listen to others whilst still willing to lead on the global stage.

Earlier, US Deputy PM Nick Clegg confirmed that the UK was committed to increasing the money it gave in overseas aid, and called on other rich nations to follow its lead.

Mr Clegg told the UN that the UK would raise its spending on aid from 0.5% of annual economic output to 0.7% from 2013.

Earlier in the day the UN launched a $40bn (£25.5bn) health initiative aimed at saving the lives of 16 million women and children over the next five years.

Announcing the Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said women and children "play a crucial role in development".

It's an awesome plan, but if his own people can't see the good sense in it (and, let's face it, American policy tends to run towards war before it even considers diplomacy and aid), I don't see how he's going to get anything done.

And, Callace, I think there probably is something to what you're saying. I think the United States is long past resenting the man for being black (we won't get into how he's actually bi-racial). But I do think there is little patience for his refusal to panic and rush to judgement.

Or, you know, to create enemies where there are none so that we can focus on hunting someone else instead of looking at internal problems.

His predecessor was more successful than I gave him credit for being, apparently.

You can't correct them because no one can prove them wrong!. You can think they are insane all you want but Obama has yet to deny he is muslim when tall signs point towards it. Also he provided a false birth certificate in 2007.

If whomever it is that oversees the electoral process in the States didn't trip over something that obvious, Obama's camp is smarter than everyone.

Also, it's hard to fake old newspaper announcements. And the announcement of his birth in the Hawaii papers has been widely distributed.

Still, if we take the position that this has been the biggest con job of all time. His mother was an American citizen. That makes him an American citizen as well, doesn't it?

As to his potentially being Muslim, I never got what was the big deal. It's one of the five major religions. There's nothing wrong with being Muslim.

Of course, he's been attending the same church in Chicago for, like, 20 years. Otherwise that whole reverend kerfuffle thing would have been a big non-issue, wouldn't it? So he's apparently not Muslim.

Coming out of hibernation here. Please not this "expletive deleted" stuff about the birth certificate and being a Muslim.

The very, very, very Republican Governor of Hawaii (a big Palin fan) has seen President's Obama's original birth certificate. She saw it before the 2008 election. It's authentic. When you get a birth certificate you typically get a certified copy. Why would you get the original when an original can be lost, stolen, thrown away, etc? The government entity that has the responsibility of recording births should have the original.

President Obama has stated that he's a Christian. Even if he was a Muslim or if we ever have a Muslim who becomes President, Vice-President or Chief Dog Catcher then what's the big deal?

And we thought we had come so far in 2008?
