Ailing Arafat to get threatment in France

Quote:
Arafat To Get Treatment In France

RAMALLAH, West Bank, Oct. 28, 2004

(CBS/AP) Doctors decided to fly ailing Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to Paris for treatment, as associates described an Palestinian leader who was too weak to stand Thursday, appeared confused and spent most of the day sleeping.

Fifteen doctors — including Palestinians and specialists rushed in from Jordan, Tunisia and Egypt — examined the 75-year-old Arafat on Thursday and decided he would be able to get the best treatment in Paris, one of the doctors said on condition of anonymity.

More here.
You can say a lot of things about Chairman Arafat, but he's a fighter, so he may get through this too, but if he doesn't ... I won't shed any tears, but I have a sneaking feeling that things wouldn't improve much with his death, if at all. Arafat has been removing any possible successor to him, so I have a feeling that his death could spark a civil war in the Palestinian territories - and that's the last thing anyone would want.

I remember immediately after the planes hit the towers and the Pentagon...I think on the day of, even...he went to give blood. A video camera followed him into a clinic and they filmed the whole thing. I know it was just a symbolic gesture, and I know it's a small, stupid blip on the radar considering his role in the conflict over there. But I can't help remembering it every time I see his name mentioned anywhere in the press.

Ihave to agree -- I'm incredibly frightened of what would happen if Arafat died. Not that I am a big supporter of him, I feel like he has made some large mistakes, but at least he is a constant leader, or tries to be.
