9/11 To Be Commemorated by Freedom March/Concert in D.C.

Here are the links:

http://www.pentagon.mil/news/Aug2005/20050809_2376.html

This is an excerpt from the second link:
Quote:
WASHINGTON, Aug. 9, 2005 – The Defense Department today announced the first "America Supports You Freedom Walk" to honor the victims of 9/11 and America's military personnel, as well as to celebrate freedom.

The Freedom Walk will begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 11 in the Pentagon South parking lot, near the site where the airliner crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11. The walk route will consist of a two-mile trek through Arlington National Cemetery, over the Potomac River, and will end by the reflecting pool on the National Mall, where a free concert featuring country music star Clint Black will take place.

"I am proud and honored to be part of the America Supports You Freedom Walk to honor the victims of 9/11 and to support our men and women in uniform," Black said.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld made the announcement today at the Pentagon.
On first glance I feel it politicizes 9/11. This date is still too raw, tragic and real for many people. My opinion is that it needs to be commemorated with solemnity rather than a march with a concert to follow.

Honestly I thought it was a joke (albeit a bad one) when I first saw the news.

Ehh, I think a concert is tacky, but I kind of like the idea of a Freedom Walk. Shows solidarity and I like how it celebrates life and our freedom. They should have some sort of drive and collect donations for the servicemembers and their families or things to send to them.

I don't see a problem in this at all. 9/11 should be remembered and not "off limits" for fear of partisan politics playing a role. After 9/11, we had songs released that called for remeberence, solitude and pride. We now have a mini-series in the works and a potential feature film courtesy of Oliver Stone. Now, I do object to Stone being behind the first major film about 9/11, because it will not be told from an honest standpoint. However, that is Hollywood's usual bias so it isn't surprising.

I don't see the problem with a walk and concert to remember 9/11. I don't think anyone believes that this is the only way to remember it. However, it is a way to show respect if you so choose. I don't see people getting worked up about Stone directing the first 9/11 movie. Yet, when a Freedom March is announced to be held at the sight of one of the terrorist attacks - that is called out for being "politicized". Simply I just don't agree and don't see the problem with people getting together to remember the attacks through a walk and music.

??? If there's a bias it's Oliver Stone's, not "Hollywood"'s. It's not like the collective "Hollywood" got together and decided he'd be the one. If he had a script and a studio greenlight first then lucky him.

The Freedom Walk seems kind of stupid but if they want to do it go ahead. Just, come on - Clint Black? This is DC, not Tennessee, people.

It's still tacky. The fact that Clint Black, who I believe is a Bush supporter, is doing the concert is partisan. You see Oliver Stone as not being able to provide an honest standpoint about 9/11 and his film and I see a walk and concert that's designed to appeal to Bush's base and not something that holds broad appeal to the country. It's a calculated effort during a time where his poll numbers are abysmal. He's reaching back to a time (9/11 and the immediate aftermath) where he had bi-partisan support and his reputation and leadership were looked at differently.

The memorial at Ground Zero and in Pennsylvania will be more moving and more appropriate.

Hmmm...I'm a little wary at how this is going to pan out. If its done with dignity and respect, the walk could be a nice way to remember that terrible day (although the name is stupid). I think the concert could be a little inappropriate though - I mean, its not a day for a party, its a day for rememberance and respect.

I just don't get what this is about .... is it to commemorate 9/11? Or to honour the American military? Or to celebrate freedom? I mean ... aren't there other days for those later two? Memorial Day and the 4th of July for instance? Why must these things be combined, shouldn't Sept. 11 be reserved for oh, say ... commemorating 9/11?

Exactly what form the event should take doesn't make much difference to me, it's just a matter of taste. But other than the fact that one of the planes hit the Pentagon, I'm confused why commemorating 9/11 and honouring the miltary should be combined into the same event. Wouldn't honouring firemen and police be more appropriate?
