63 neglected cats discovered during traffic stop

Quote:
ROSWELL, New Mexico (AP) -- A routine traffic stop Wednesday led to the discovery of more than 60 sick and hungry cats in the back of a moving van driven by a 71-year-old woman.

Mary Jane Lyle pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of animal cruelty at a court appearance. She was being held in a Chaves County detention center.

If prosecuted, the charges carry possible prison time.

An officer pulled over the van because one of its taillights was out. While the officer was talking to Lyle, he heard noises coming from the back.

"Our officer heard a cat that appeared to be injured in some way," said police spokesman Robert Giles.

Lyle said she had a cat. But when the officer opened the back of the truck, he discovered 63.

Two of the cats were dead and the others were "in various stages of health," Giles said.

The cats were turned over to local animal control officers.

Police said Lyle was traveling from Minden, Michigan, to Tucson, Arizona.
Poor kitty cats.

Why were they in a moving van? She should have just let them go free! They would have a better chance of surviving. I know my sisters adopted a stray housecat and we've turned it into an outdoor/barn cat. That thing is tough.

Man, that's awful, but that happens more than you think. Many animals are abused and neglected in this country. It's a real shame.

Me, I need more information on why she was in this situation before I can reach any conclusions. Were the cats sick and hungry because she was mistreating them, or because she got them that way? I know there are lots of people out there who "rescue" cats who would otherwise be put down because they're sick or unwanted. Maybe she was taking better care of them than they'd get otherwise.

And letting them go free? That seems pretty cruel to me too ... some cats may make it, but lots wouldn't, or they'd end up getting caught and put in an animal shelter. Cat adoption rates tend to be low, much lower than for dogs, there's a good chance they wouldn't make it at the shelter either.

I agree. "Here, kitty! Of you go into oncoming traffic, or into the forest to be torn up by a wolf!"

Why the hell can't people just leave cats alone? Christ on a cracker.

I agree, leave them alone...let them go.

Cats are animals with instincts. They're not gonna die just because you don't feed them fancy feast and have a nice litter box for them. This summer while my parents were on vacation I totally forgot to feed the cat and it was fine. We found a rabbits head and a bird under the porch. Even in the cold winter, it lives in the garage with some extra blankets and it just grows extra fur and it is fine. My mom DID sneak the cat inside over Christmas to take a picture in front of the tree, but luckily my dad didn't catch them. The cat got in once and he lost it! Hell I don't even think we've ever took it to the vet. But we can't either because the cat can't go into the car.

Here is a new article that tends to have a bit more information included in it -

Honestly, I do not know much about cats and their survival skills since I am a dog owner. However, there is a cat in the neighborhood that appears from time to time and seems to be pretty healthy. I believe it was left by a previous neighbor and it has kind of stuck around the area. Not sure about its survival skills since I know a few neighbors have been known to leave it food out from time to time.

I agree. Despite cats' instincts to survive, they are still domesticated animals. And if the cats were born as strays, the survival rates would most likely be a lot higher than the survival rates of regular house cats. But still, as an animal activist, I think the last thing those cats need is to be left out on their own, especially in the winter and having ailments! Right now, until they can be adopted into good, safe homes, the best place for those cats would be a foster program or a no-kill shelter. (Sadly, so many of our no-kill shelters are already overly crowded. )
