4.3 Earthquake Hits Oklahoma

Oklahoma Earthquake 4.3 Magnitude: Two Injured In Strong Quake

Quote:
Oklahoma has been hit by a 4.3 magnitude earthquake around 9 a.m. today. Two people have been reportedly injured in Norman.

The earthquake could be felt through central Oklahoma, parts of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Texas. It was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in Oklahoma.

The National Earthquake Center posted this:

"Date-Time: Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 14:06:29 UTC
Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at 09:06:29 AM at epicenter

Time of Earthquake in other Time Zones
Location 35.217°N, 97.271°W

7.9 km (4.9 miles) (poorly constrained)

Distances: 15 km (10 miles) E of Norman, Oklahoma
35 km (20 miles) WSW of Shawnee, Oklahoma
35 km (20 miles) SE of OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma
65 km (40 miles) ENE of Chickasha, Oklahoma"

Kansas and Oklahoma do not usually get earthquakes.
I love that last line, no DUH

Officials say a 4.-5 magnitude earthquake has rattled parts of central Oklahoma and was felt as far away as southern Kansas.

There are no immediate reports of injuries.

Geophysicist Don Blakeman with the National Earthquake Information Center says the earthquake struck at 9:06 a.m with a preliminary magnitude of 4.5. The quake was centered about six miles east of Norman, where some minor damage such as broken windows has been reported.

Blakeman says the quake was felt as far away as Wichita, Kan.

Norman police Capt. Leonard Judy says the quake sent officers running out of the department to see if someone had crashed into the building.

Well, I think the fact that Oklahoma and Kansas do not normally get earthquakes is pretty relevant insofar as 4.3 is super high in terms of earthquakes.

People in Los Angeles probably wouldn't have even felt it, you know?

But since Oklahoma and Kansas don't get many earthquakes, I'm guessing it was felt quite a lot more over where you are.

How are you, by the way? Hope the horses didn't get spooked and the kitties are okay.

Actually I'm not sure I felt it, in all honesty. I'm guessing by the timeframe that that's what I thought was a gunshot or thunder (rumbling) ... but beyond that ...

I did hear of a building on the OU campus that was closed and had to be checked out for safety/structural stability.

You thought it was a gunshot!

That would not even occur to me as an option.

I did, once upon a time, start out thinking a really big truck might be driving outside my house... but then it didn't stop, so I figured it probably wasn't a truck.

I guess earthquakes can happen anywhere, really.

I never heard more about it, so I'm assuming the two injuries were minor.

NOW ... we had another just this week, but in Arkansas, but a bit smaller. Crazy stuff right now.
