A 12-year-old Highland Park (Michigan) boy has been charged with criminal sexual conduct after being accused of trying to force an 11-year-old Highland Park girl at gunpoint to have sex with him and later beating her for refusing his advances.

According to Wayne County sheriff's investigators, the alleged rape attempt took place about 4 p.m. Sunday at the boy's home in the 100 block of Midland, near Hamilton, in Highland Park.

Also at the home were another 11-year-old girl from Highland Park and a 13-year-old Highland Park boy. They were having sex in an upstairs bedroom while the attempted assault occurred, authorities said. The 13-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct for having sex with the girl, who described him as her boyfriend, because there was no penetration, officials said.

If convicted, both boys could be held in a juvenile detention facility until they are 21. The boys also would have to register with the state as sex offenders.

The kids met at Reggie McKenzie Park in Highland Park, where the 12-year-old boy said: "Come to my house and get some water," Lt. Paul Jones said at a news conference Tuesday at the sheriff's office in Detroit.

When the four arrived at the house, where the 12-year-old's mother was home at the time, they went upstairs. The 13-year-old boy and his 11-year-old girlfriend disrobed in a bedroom. The 12-year-old boy and the other 11-year-old girl were in an upstairs hallway.

"Basically, he sees the other two kids on the bed trying to have sex. He tells this girl 'I want to do what they're doing,' " Jones said.

The 12-year-old boy grabbed her and the girl said no, Jones said. He told her again that he wanted to have sex and she refused. He then went into another room and came back with a .22-caliber rifle loaded with three rounds and pointed it at the girl.

Jones said the boy then said, "If you don't have sex with me, I'm going to kill you."

At that time, the 12-year-old's mother came up the stairs to tell him that he had friends waiting for him on the front porch. Jones said the boy put the gun away and the children left.

Once outside, Jones said, the boy began beating the girl for refusing his requests for sex. The girl told her mother, she called police and the boys were arrested the same day. Both youths are in the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility. The 12-year-old boy was charged with assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct involving penetration and a weapons charge.

The 13-year-old was charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct. The boy, who turns 14 on June 25, asked for a probable cause hearing. That hearing is set for June 20.

Both boys appeared Monday before Wayne County Family Court referee Catherine Gardner, who set bonds at 10% of $5,000. Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Robert Heimbuch said his office was working to appeal the low bond.

The younger boy has no record of police contacts. The older boy was arrested in August on an assault and battery charge, but it was dismissed.

"It's never easy when you hear of something like that happening," said Lawrence Meyer, chief of field operations for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

The fact that the mother was home during all of this, kills me. Parents cannot keep track of their children on a regular basis, let alone in their own house now?!?!

There are some people in this world that shouldn't have children, this woman is one of them. In her house children were having sex, another kid was attempting to rape a kid at gunpoint and in her yard the same kid was beating the same kid. And nothing was done? Child services should be all over this.

And as for that kid, lock him up. I don't care if he is 12, if you're beating girls and attempting to rape them and already wielding a gun, I don't think many parents or people would want that kid anywhere near them.

I think they should try to give him so help while he's locked up. But this shouldn't be a couple day, week, month type of thing. If you're doing that type of violence at that age, you need alot of help and that's going to take time. Throwing someone like that back out into the world after that with a slap on the wrist is just asking for trouble. Another question that should be asked is why does a 12 year old even have a gun? Did he find it in his house?

When I was 11, 12, 13, 14....hell, even today when I go home for breaks, my parents don't just let me bring strange people into the house. If I ever had a boy over when I was younger, my parents wouldn't just let us go upstairs by ourselves -- especially if they didn't know him! This mother should be charged with something, I don't know what. Also, for having the gun in the house and available to her children to take.

I also think it's a little scary that the older boy is 13 and has already been arrested once.

I was 18 years old and my parents didn't let my boyfriend sleep over until we'd been going out for nine months. For me this is amazing, and is in part, most part, the fault of the parents. I think any behavior, other than chemical imbalances in the brain (Schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder, psychosis) is a learned behavior, from outside influences, or a behavior that hasn't been presented as bad.
This is one reason that I hate pornography, it teaches a lot of young men that women are nothing more than objects and that they are in a totally dominant role, physically and sexually. Now, I don't know if this boy had access to pornography, but there was something in his life that gave him the idea that this behavior was acceptable. And the mother...that floors me. That woman should go to jail as well.

So now it's NORMAL to be sexually provocative at 12?? Geez, what are these women thinking? It's really no wonder that kids are so - i dunno, curious seems the wrong word, but desperate to experience stuff. There was a case a few months ago here in the UK about a 13 year old boy who forced an 8 year old girl to do stuff with him (in a playground, no less), after he'd been watching hardcore porn. I'll try find the news story. But it's a societal thing, not just the fault of the kid.

I was in 7th grade when I had my first "boyfriend" but sixteen when I had my first kiss. Parents aren't putting restrictions on their kids. I wasn't allowed to date until I was sixteen. I could go out and group date, but we couldn't go alone, and to me that was fine, I wasn't looking for sex or a husband, I was just having fun at the movies or eating dinner. I don't understand these parents.

I find it sad that 11 year olds are even having sex. They're still only kids, I just couldn't imagine any 11 year olds that I know being in that situation. And I find it even scarier (sp?) to think that my soon to 5 year old niece will be dealing with this sort of stuff in just 6 years. It will probably be way worse by then, kids will probably be doing it by 9.

I had access to a rifle, and a number of handguns, but I never would have used them like that. My family has always had guns around the house, but they're just for target practice and home protection. I could never imagine pointing them at another human being, even the thought makes me feel sick.

I agree completely. I cannot get over the fact that the mother was home the entire time this all went down. Young kids upstairs having sex!??!!? Teenagers of the opposite sex should not be allowed to be alone in bedrooms or out of view of parents at this age.
