***The Shocking News Thread***

TheShocking News Thread

Due to the commonality of news stories being posted here regarding "shocking" situations, we have decided that from now on all news stories which fall under that category will be all be posted in one thread for the sake of the organization and activity of the board. You may post stories and reply to them in the same manner that we have been doing, except exclusively in this thread. We hope that this system will be efficient and effective and if it is than there may be more threads like this in the future.

Thanks,

Your N&P Board Moderators

*We understand that there will be exceptions when it comes to some shocking news stories. So if you feel that the story you're about to post doesn't fit with the rest of the thread, or has a high discussion potential, then feel free to start a thread for that particular story.*

I'm still seeing random threads for stories that can be posted on the "theme" threads. So I just wanted to remind everyone about the posting of shocking news stories in this thread.

Man Says Revenge Behind Allegation Involving Marijuana, 5-Year-Old

Posted: 5:18 pm CDT April 11, 2005
Updated: 5:38 pm CDT April 11, 2005

Angleton, Texas -- A 22-year-old Angleton woman said revenge led to her being charged with endangering a child for allegedly letting her 5-year-old daughter smoke marijuana, she told Local 2 in an exclusive story Monday.

Amanda Williams is free on $7,500 bond after she was arrested Friday on the state jail felony charge.

The mother of three denies the allegations."I did not let my 5-year-old daughter smoke marijuana," Williams said.

Angleton police said the incident happened in December at her parents' mobile home.Williams said she and her children were living there, along with a roommate, who is the main witness against her.

She said that she called police on the roommate when the woman became violent. When police arrived, they arrested the roommate for outstanding warrants. Williams said the roommate made up the story about the marijuana to get her back. "We have no evidence of that," said Detective Sgt. Kirk Coleman of the Angleton Police Department. "She had a routine habit -- smoking marijuana in front of her kids and on this particular day, the kid got hold of a marijuana cigarette and started smoking. "Police said that Williams admitted to smoking marijuana while her children were at home.

"That's what she told the cops after they started threatening her with all kinds of stuff off of a statement from this other girl," said Shawn Williams, Amanda Williams' brother. The roommate has a record, including assault convictions. Williams has a record for possession of marijuana a few years ago.If convicted, she could face up to two years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000.

Child Protective Services is also involved in the case, and has placed Williams' children in the temporary custody of her parents.

Lawmakers Want To Extend Daylight-Saving Time

Time Change Would Start Month Early, End Month Later

Posted: 7:19 am CDT April 11, 2005

Boston -- Some lawmakers want to extend daylight-saving time.

Massachusetts Congressman Ed Markey and Missouri Congressman Fred Upton authored an amendment that would create a two-month extension of daylight-saving time. And the House Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously passed the amendment last Wednesday.

Under their plan, daylight-saving time would start a month earlier -- on the first Sunday in March -- and end a month later -- on the last Sunday of November.

Markey said the benefits of a longer daylight-saving period would be savings in energy, less crime, fewer traffic fatalities and more recreation time.

The amendment is part of a broad energy bill that the full House is expected to vote on later this spring.

Daylight-saving time now runs from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October.

If you ask me, America is slowly turning to a communist country runned by the government. Now the government wants to control time and pushing daylights savings time. Man, we don't have a real time anymore.

Didn't think we'd actually go a month without this happening again did ya?

The 18-year-old boy toy from the HS for Health Professions and Human Services shrugged off the grade, but couldn't forgive his teacher, Rhianna Ellis, 25, for reneging on her promise to abort the pregnancy.

I'm sure it could have some positive effects, but I don't really like the idea of changing DST. I think it's fine just the way it is. Not that it'd really affect me all that much anyway.

(CNN) -- A 9-year-old Alcoa, North Carolina, boy shot and killed his mother before taking his own life, according to the Warren County Sheriff's Department.

Taylor Jones apparently killed his mother, 38-year-old Gloria Pulley, shortly after midnight Saturday morning, the department said. He left a suicide note in which he apologized for her death.

Authorities have not been able to determine a motive.

"They were a very nice family. I never had any problem with none of them," said Warren County Sheriff John Williams, who said he knew the family personally.

Jones is said to have had a good relationship with his family members and friends, Williams said. There was no obvious discord between him and his mother, he said, and it's unknown if he was on any type of medication or if he had any mental or emotional issues.

Williams said family members became worried over the weekend after not seeing Pulley or Jones for more than a day. Pulley's brother and mother, who live nearby, kicked in the front door of the home Saturday and found the two bodies in one of the bedrooms.

"A family gun" was used in the shootings, Williams said, but it's unknown where and how the weapons was stored.

Autopsy results released to law enforcement by the North Carolina Medical Examiner's office confirm the shooting was a murder-suicide, Williams said.

Jones' father, Pulley's ex-husband, lives in Georgia.

Nine years old? He must have been one unhappy kid. It's so sad.

Wow, there seems to be no explanation for something like that. Is a nine year old ripe enough to start having that much angst and issues? I wonder if he was on medication or something.

You have to wonder what kind of pressures, or issues, some kids are facing these days...especially when a nine year old is planning a murder suicide.

Anyway, from Netscape.com...

Girl Kills Mom While Practicing Parking

A 16-year-old girl who had a legal learner's permit was doing what teenagers everywhere do: practicing parallel parking with her mother. But something went terribly wrong.

The Associated Press reports that the mother, Ryta Z. Deriso, and her daughter had set up cones on a quiet street near their home in Marlboro, N.J. to practice parking. The girl was backing up the car when she pressed the accelerator too hard, causing the car to jump up onto the curb and hit her mother who was standing there watching her daughter. Deriso, 44, was pronounced dead last Thursday. The girl's name is not being released since she is a juvenile. No charges will be filed, Robert A. Honecker Jr., a Monmouth County prosecutor, told AP. "This is going down as a tragic accident," he said.

A similar freak accident occurred days later in Philadelphia when a 15-year-old girl, who did not have a learner's permit, was getting a driving lesson from her father in a parking lot on Sunday afternoon. The Philadelphia Daily News reports that she mixed up the gas and brake pedals and lost control of the car, which crashed into a front yard and killed a young mother. The vehicle narrowly missed the mother's 1-year-old baby. Sarah McGinley, 18, had been playing with her daughter outside when the accident occurred. An eyewitness described the incident, saying he saw the car "flying through the air." McGinley managed to toss her baby to safety in nearby bushes, but she was unable to save herself. The car struck her and trapped her beneath it. About a dozen men in the neighborhood rushed to the accident scene and lifted the car off McGinley, but she died about three hours later. So far no charges have been filed against the teenager or her father.

Can people please learn to drive somewhere far off from other people?

And um even if you mix up the gas and break to begin with can't you stop quickly?? That girl had no business being behind the wheel of a car - especially with no learner's permit. And couldn't her dad have hit the break?

I guess I can see how the first one could happen more than the 2nd incident. For the 1st one the mother should have been farther back..

Gah, it just depresses me that these people can't handle their cars at ALL.

Genetic Mingling Mixes Human, Animal Cells

The University of Nevada-Reno researcher talks matter-of-factly about his plans to euthanize one of the pregnant sheep in a nearby lab. He can't wait to examine the effects of the human cells he had injected into the fetus' brain about two months ago.
"Can't wait"?!

I could comment on that beyond this sentence, but it is wiser that I don't.
