A new twist on the man of steel
By: Lia Haberman

Tom Welling's career is moving faster than a speeding bullet.

A year ago, he was auditioning for commercials in New York. Then he decided to try his luck in Los Angeles, where he quickly landed a six-episode part on Judging Amy as the judge's boy toy, Karate Rob. Now he's a teen dream on the verge, thanks to his starring gig as a pre-Man of Steel Clark Kent on the WB's Smallville.

In this incarnation of the Superman legend, high schooler Clark is less interested in his newly discovered superpowers than in scoring a date with the prettiest girl in school, Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk). Just wait till he discovers X-ray vision.

Which superpower do you want the most?
His invincibility, the fact that he can't get hurt physically. I play basketball with my friends, and I've been known to go out for a jog once in a while, but if I was invincible, maybe I would take up some extreme sports.

Were you worried the producers would make you wear tights and a cape?
When I went on the first audition, they told you as you walked through the door there would be no flying and no tights. This is all about Clark Kent before he's Superman, before he gets the tights and starts flying.

John Schneider, aka Bo Duke of The Dukes of Hazzard, plays your dad on the show. What's that like?
I was a little nervous meeting him. Growing up, I'd seen him on TV, and I think I had the General Lee car to play with when I was a child. When I met him, he was such a great guy; he's so warm and just a nice person. Our relationship works great onscreen, too, because we had an immediate connection.

One of the other characters on the show was really nervous about meeting him; I won't say who. And I said, "Just walk up to him; he's such a nice guy." "But I want to ask him about Dukes." And I said, "Just ask him; he's totally cool with it." He's really a down-to-earth guy.

Have you splurged on anything since getting the job?
[Laughs ] We haven't been paid yet. They don't just write you a check at the beginning; they pay you as it goes. So, I'm being very conservative. We have 13 episodes right now, and we're waiting to get the other nine picked up. But since we're going to be shooting in Vancouver for the next, maybe, eight months, I'll probably want to rent an apartment. I've been staying in a hotel.

What was it like playing Karate Rob on Judging Amy?
I was the 10-years-younger love interest for Amy Brenneman's character and also her daughter's karate instructor, which caused a little conflict of interest. It was a great role...a three-episode job, and over Christmas, they aired the episodes and got such good feedback they brought me back for three more. It was actually Amy Brenneman's first love affair on the show. I think the fans were liking that story.

First karate instructor, now superhero. Why are you always the strong guy?
I'm almost six-foot-three. Maybe that has something to do with it. But you never really know. There are times you go in on things you think you're perfect for, and you don't even get called back. And then there are other times when you don't think you did that hot, and you get the job.

Were you there when Michael Rosenbaum shaved his head for his role as Lex Luthor?
I saw him maybe five minutes before he shaved it. He didn't have much hair to begin with. But I think it looks great on him. It's very becoming.

The WB's pretty sensitive about haircuts. Have they mentioned anything to you about not chopping off your locks?
[Laughs ] I'm getting just a little trim for when we start up.

It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Smallville star Tom Welling in an ultra-elegant Ralph Lauren tuxedo. So what if the tux seems a little big for him? This cutie pie can be our stylish superhero anytime, though we know we take a backseat to fiancée Jamie. Now, if only we had his X-ray vision.

E! Online, Sizzlin' Sixteen 2002

Few things are a sure bet in Hollywood, but if you appear in your big, buzzed-about TV pilot tied up like a scarecrow in only a pair of boxers with a big red S painted on your six-pack, you'll make E! Online's Sizzlin' Sixteen list. And so, Tom Welling, who plays a teenage Clark Kent, caught our attention when billboards for WB's Smallville sprouted up around our fair metropolis.

"I'm going to skip that," says a demure Welling on the phone from his adopted home in Vancouver, where he shoots 16 hours a day six days a week.

The billboards worked, as Smallville was a hit right out of the gate. "We have such quality and depth," says Welling, "so it's not a big surprise that we're received as well as we are. I get the show taped for me, and I love watching it. If I'm there every day and still be excited about watching it...that's something special."

When Smallville breaks for its four-month hiatus, Welling will take advantage of his heat. Pitch his agency, CAA, for any movie with a kid between 18 and 25, and they'll recommend...Tom Welling. "My marketability has improved," he says modestly. He doesn't seem concerned about teen roles weighing him down like a chunk of Kryptonite: "I really haven't put up any walls or barriers for any project."

And why should he worry? He could well be destiny's child. After he landed the part of Clark Kent, Welling's dad told him that when he was four and five, he wore a Superman costume for Halloween "and wouldn't have it any other way."

Flash-forward 20 years or so, and Welling's practicing his X-ray vision on high school lockers while the guy who plays Lex Luther, Michael Rosenbaum, is pleading with him to get off the phone so they can get lunch.

Now, about being tied up half-naked in a cornfield...Welling says there's nothing sexy about it. "It was 15 degrees, and I had on a pair of Alaskan work boots and had two heaters behind me. There wasn't much of that that night."

Not really a huge bit of Tom news, but in the new Dreamwatch (issue #102) there is an interview with Allison Mack, and she talks a bit about what type of guy Tom is, and what he's like to work with:

"He is one of the most down-to-earth, honest, interesting people I have ever met. I love Tom's innocence and his naivete - although he would say he doesn't have any. He's very new in the business compared to myself and Michael for instance, and he's very willing to share and grow and I just love that...After every scene where I have to cry or do something emotional or do something big, he always applauds. And after my close-ups he gives me hugs. He's just so supportive and wonderful. I'm really glad to see someone like him becoming successful. I count myself lucky to be a small part of that process."

Yep, Allison's a sweetie.

Tom's also in the March 2003 issue of YM, and there's a poster of him in Teen Beat. They used the promo shot of him with his arms on the rafter above him. Yum.

So, here it is the translation of the german Tom Welling Interview... Many thanks to Ezmeralda for the help!!!

Bravo // 29. Januar 2003

From a Nobody to a SUPERHERO:
As CLARK KENT, Tom Welling created the break-through.
BRAVO spoke with the star of Smallville

"Superman is still virgin"

A Date with Superman - who doesn't dream about it?! But before I can ask the first question, "Smallville"-Star Tom Welling (25) tries to rob all illusions: "I have to disappoint you, I am an absolute 'normal' guy in no possession of any superpowers!" Then reaching out his hands and asks: "Do you think the hands of a superhero would look like this?"

BRAVO: You chew your fingernails...?
TOM: ...yes, that's a terrible vice of me. But I don't chew because of being nervous, it's just a laziness. I hate to file my fingernails. If they become too long, I bite them off and spit them out.

BRAVO: And which are your advantages, then?
TOM: I cannot get enough of peace so easily. My motto is: "In the peace the strength lies". If I become nevertheless get into a stress situation, I withdraw and think about it. The solution then usually comes from above.

BRAVO: Then you are completely different than Clark Kent, which you represent in "Smallville"...
TOM: Well, the poor guy can’t talk with anybody about his weird forces, except to his foster parents. Not to mention that he could brag about his powers. His abilities are making him to an outsider, he feels lonely. In addition, Superman is still a "virgin" to his secret love to Lana Lang he doesn't converge.

BRAVO: You already found your private luck...
TOM: ..yes, on July 5, 2003 I married, my friend for many years, Jamie White. But my wife decided not to live a public life. I respect that. Because of that I don't tell more about it only so much: Jamie is a special woman.

BRAVO: Okay, back to the series. Which abilities of Superman would you like to have?
TOM: If I could make myself invisible, I would sneak into a basketball team of the professional US league NBA. And his x-ray also is a great thing. Which boy wouldn't like to be able to look through clothes?

BRAVO: What do you have in common with the young Clark Kent?
TOM: Two things: As teenager I also wasn't the straight most in demand guy of school class, but rather an inconspicuous and shy boy. And I have, like Clark, a very dearly relationship to my parents as well. Most teenagers want to move out as soon as possible and live on their own feet. Differently than me.

BRAVO: How long did you live with your parents?
TOM: Up to the age of 21. When I graduation from high school at 16, I didn't know what to do with my life. I was glad that my parents didn't push me to do something.

BRAVO: Normally it's College...
TOM: ...I didn’t feel it. I let myself drift and I worked as a building worker. However I didn't wanted to be so dependent of my parents.

BRAVO: Is it correct that you worked for two years as a Model?
TOM: Yes, I was discovered on the road by a talent scout of the famous photographer Bruce Weber. That was when I was 21. I moved to New York and I earned a great deal of money with modeling. Because of this job I often was in Europe, as well. But after two years I had enough of it. In January 2000 I moved to Los Angeles with the goal to become an actor.

BRAVO: Did you take acting lessons?
TOM: No, never. I just went from one casting to another one. After five month I landed my first role in the TV series "Judging Amy" - as a Karate teacher named Rob and I was seen in 6 episodes. With "Smallville" I got the break-through.

BRAVO: Is it true that you recently got to meet Christopher Reeve - the actor who is world-wide famous for the "superman"-movies?
TOM: Yes, Christopher is playing the role of a brilliant professor in "Smallville" which is sitting in a wheel chair. He is a huge fan of the series. As the scientist Dr. Swann he makes me familiar with my true appointment. To work with him was an absolutely great experience for me.
