I stumbled this Erica Durance interview with NY Post's Pop Watch which was published back in September and found these wonderful (and one hilarious) quotes about our lovely Tom:

Quote:
PW: Tom Welling seems like one of the nicest guys on TV - true?

Erica: He's very grounded and lovely. So many shows can fall apart because of animosity on-set and you're always looking to your lead for behavioral cues and he's such a professional. Absolutely no ego, which means the set is also egoless.

PW: It's amazing that such a gorgeous person can be so unaware of their looks.

Erica: I know, we were laughing when we screened the first episode because it's the first time you see Clark looking so edgy and scruffy. I think people have been waiting for clean as a whistle Clark to look rough and ready so when they tune in tonight it will be like, "Ooooh my goodness!" This is a serious step up. We love to tease him because we all saw it at the same time and it was like a chorus of "holy smokes, Tom!" And all he could say was, "shut up."
Source.

Pem, thanks very much for that quote. Tom seems to be utterly adorable.

Here's a portion of an interview with Glen Winter, done by Bryan Cairns, published in its entirety in Smallville Magazine #30 (Jan./Feb. 2009):

Quote:
What has impressed you the most about this cast, especially leading man Tom Welling?
Tom, bless his heart, is there more than I am, because at least when I get to prep or shoot my episode, I get a little break. Tom's there almost every single day, [putting in] long hours. The guy gets tired but continually puts on a happy face, shows up to work, does his job, and enjoys a good laugh. I can't say enough about [the cast]. For a season eight show, [usually] you hear about prima donnas acting in certain ways, and not one of our actors have behaved that way. We all marvel at it and say, "[Can] you believe this person was just as cool seven years ago?"

What was fun about doing this season's Committed, where it's more of an offbeat character exploration between Lois and Clark, rather than some big villain battle?
This was definitely the highlight for me out of all the episodes I have done, because the best episodes are the ones with the best scripts. It was writer Bryan Miller's first episode, and he just hit it out of the park. The dialogue was snappy and funny. Once again, Tom and Erica had fun with it. Tom came into one of the productin meetings and said, "This is a great script. The writing's really strong and all the dialogue means something. It's not in there for the sake of it, and I really appreciate that." It was great to hear him sign off on it that way, because Tom always has a definitive opinion on the scripts in prep. He doesn't just read them the night before. He reads them, has script notes, will call with suggestions, and because he and I have worked together for so long, he'll give me a little more of his time and discuss things. That gives me ideas, and he'll tell me what he thinks about stuff, which helps me in prep or with my directing process. What was so cool was that the comedy of the script was balanced with the total horror and what goes on in the basement with the electrocution [device].
Also in the same issue is this quote from Jessica Parker Kennedy (she played Bette in Plastique), from her interview with Bryan Cairns:

Quote:
"Sam Witwer and Tom Welling were absolute gentlemen, and I looked up to them very much," she smiles. "Sam has such a loving personality and is very easy-going. Everything's fun for him. Tom has this real groundedness to him. He doesn't have to raise his voice to be funny or kind. He has this wonderful essence about him that's really comforting to be around. There were scenes where I was feeling [frustrated because things weren't going] the way I wanted them to and Tom was so helpful. He said, 'When I'm in that situation, I try this...' They were both so welcoming to me, and I felt like I fit in on the show."

Szilvia, thanks so much for the quotes. I have to say the Glen Winter quote makes me love Tom even more and especially that Tom loved Committed as much as we did. It warms my heart to read how sweet Tom is to the guest stars; how he really goes above and beyond to make them feel comfortable, wants them to enjoy their experience, and does everything he can to ensure that.

It's really refreshing to hear about an actor who remains grounded despite his fame and situation within Hollywood.

You're welcome. So many people have said wonderful things about Tom. I can only imagine what a pleasure it would be to work with him.

In case anyone hasn't heard, Tom will be directing episode #21 of SV Season 8.
A big thank you to Pem for the heads up about that.
The news tidbit has been posted at KryptonSite.

Sure

Just a little FYI if you didn't know he was supposed to direct Hex which aired this past Thursday but he got sick during the filming of Turbulence and therefore switched episodes with Marizee Almas, who was supposed to direct episode 21.

It's pretty huge that he is directing the second to last episode of this season.

Aww, Tom got sick? Hopefully it was just a common cold or something very minor...

I love the fact that they've given him that particular episode to direct. I can't wait to see what he does with that one!

He got the flu. Apparently he was out for a few days. It was luck that Marizee was originally going to direct 21 and he was able to switch with her.

Oh no, the flu is nasty. Poor Tom! Good thing the directing switch worked out well.

Oh really? That's kinda too bad, but like you said, I'm sure he'll do a good job. It's exciting that it's going to be an episode so close to the season finale!

Your new icon Tom really does have bedroom eyes The ED for 12 episodes isn't cool but oh well. I am sad that this means we get another Clark lite episode so close to the finale (episode 20) but this is a HUGE episode in terms of setting up the finale and I have no doubt Tom will do a fabulous job.

Thanks about the icon. It's about time that I use that one. So many talented icon makers at .

You're right, we should expect to see fewer Clark scenes in that episode, but as long as he's in it at least a bit and he does a great job like usual, I'll be satisfied. Then I would imagine that he'll get the regular amount of screen time in the finale.

He definitely will.

They pushed back the last day of shooting. It was supposed to be April 1st and now it's April 8th; apparently there were some changes made to the finale script, and they were done later than normal hence the extra week. Poor Tom .. one less week of vacation time

Oh wow, so they're still filming?! Thanks for the info.
Tom sure gives it everything he's got for this show. I'm sure he'll be very glad to get time off, though, once they wrap up the season.
