Treasure Hunters

Quote:
NBC digs 'Treasure'
New reality skein offers own 'Da Vinci Code'

By JOSEF ADALIAN

NBC is readying an unscripted skeinskein that will let everyday people search for their own "National Treasure" by cracking the PeacockPeacock's version of "The Da Vinci Code."

Net has pacted with "Project Runway"/"Project Greenlight""Project Greenlight" producers Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz for "Treasure Hunters," an ambitious hourlong reality skein that will send multiplayer teams on a global quest to unlock the secrets of an intricate puzzle.

Each clue will unlock another part of the mystery. Whichever teams puts all the clues together first will discover the location of an undisclosed treasure.

NBC has ordered at least 10 episodes of the show, with casting set to begin immediately; skein could be on the air as early as late August.

"It's inspired by the success of books like 'The Da Vinci Code,' " said NBC U cable entertainment and cross-network strategy prexyprexy Jeff Gaspin, who might have also pointed out a similarity to Jerry BruckheimerJerry Bruckheimer's feature smash "National Treasure."

"We'll use iconic locations, with a mixture of real history and folklore along with our own fantasy elements we use to create this puzzle," he added.

While elements of "The Amazing Race" also seem evident, Gaspin said "Treasure Hunters" will differ from CBS' reality hit because of one key element.

"As opposed to focusing on the race, the show will focus on solving the puzzle," he said. "The challenge will come as they try to put the puzzle together."

And don't expect the clues to be mere brainteasers.

"It's vital to have a puzzle with complexity, so that in addition to their own brainpower, contestants will have to use the Internet and library as resources for research," Gaspin added.

Viewers, too, might also use the Net to get involved in the show. "There will be a component for the Internet," he said.

Cutforth and Lipsitz will exec produce via their Magical Elves shingleshingle.

Duo have become one of Gaspin's more important production teams, showrunning Bravo's hit "Project Runway" as well as the cablercabler's upcoming "Project Greenlight." They also worked on the third cycle of "Last Comic Standing."
It starts Sunday, June 18 then I think it moves to Mondays. There's not much on NBC's site but maybe they will change that soon.

I am so excited for this show! I love treasure hunts and shows/movies about treasure hunts so this is right up my alley. I hope it lives up to my expectations.

It's on tonight! I'm so excited. It's two hours, so don't miss any of it. I had my VCR set from 6-8. It's a good thing I double checked because it's on from 7-9 central. My husband would have killed me and I would have been mad too.

Eh, I didn't think it was that great. And I got soooo sick of that stupid phone, and hearing the host say the same message over and over again. Show it once, man. Maybe I'm comparing him to Phil, who's the best..but still. The host sucks.

And whats up with the team names? Didn't like that. Can't really comment on the teams themselves, except to say that Pastor's wife looks like a freakin psycho some times. And he's not all that nice either

And as for solving the puzzles, i mean, one team (USA I think) was randomly shouting out locations on the map, and the pilot kept answering in the background, saying it was incorrect. Seems they aren't really solving the puzzle that way.

Maybe it will get better...but I didn't really enjoy it tonight.

I actually liked the episode (although there's definitely room for improvement). I agree about the host and the phone though - it was annoying to hear the same message more than once. And how loud is the phone? Because can't other teams just overhear?

I don't have any favourites yet but I already hate like half of the teams, like the one with the Pastor father, the geniuses, the Miss USAs, and those mullet people. Although the mullet people were hilarious to watch because they were checking inside logs and crawling into caves and all. I'd want them to stay just for the comic relief.

I'm glad they're not doing the thing where 5 teams were in one location and the other 5 were in another anymore. It was way too hard to keep track of all the teams and the challenges.

I really dug all of it, I think the Mullett people need to go and the Pastor's family.
I liked how they really did kind of make it all fair, although I would have liked it if the top people got saddled with the bottom people, that woulda been funny.

I didn't plan on watching this, but gave it a try since nothing else is on these days. I thought it was pretty good. I missed the first half hour, but I think I got the jist of it. Those hicks were hilarious to watch. Picking up logs and rocks..maybe this is something? Still very hard to remember teams. I was nervous for the geniuses after they gave the combination to the hicks and the hicks got their clue box open but it wouldn't open for the geniuses.

I do like the complicated clues, like when the last bus went to the wrong spot and there was a cylinder on top of the map. Not that anyone figured that out, but it's funny how these clues are right in front of them.

I finally watched my tape last night. I liked it a lot but I agree with the criticisms of the host and repetition of the clues.

I like all the teams so far but there are individual people I don't like. It was hard to keep track of everyone when they were split up in Alaska and Hawaii, especially since there are so many of them. But I do like the 3 person teams.

That's because they didn't pay attention to the clue that said they had to reset after each try. Some geniuses.

I'm so clueless that I just realized last night that there were only 3 per team. I missed the first part of episode 1 when I assume they introduced teams, then they put 2 teams together and I wasn't paying attention to everyone. There's usually bunches running around together anyway.

The Hanlons are funny to watch. I can't believe they were in the mine for 11 hours! Then sleeping in the next morning when everyone left on their canoes. Then at the very end, when they could be eliminated, they go and get some fast food. And STILL make it to the next round! But

I feel bad for the grad her hurt her leg. I can't see them going to far. It's going to be very difficult to be carrying her everywhere, especially if they have anything physical to do.

Ok, the snakes in the mine were freaky. I would have been so out of there!

Sucks how the previews hint at the teams ganging up to try to take down the Air Force team. I like Air Force; they're capable people who don't resort to deception to get ahead, unlike the damn Pastors.

The Hanlons are amusing but annoying at the same time, especially when they were looking through the trash at Mount Rushmore, thinking the clue would be in there. And listening to their banter makes me feel stupid somehow.

Oh, is it me or does the younger guy of Air Force resemble Jeremy Bloom?

I haven't seen the previews since the end of the last episode so maybe it's a different one now, but I could've sworn I saw the Brown family participating in the next task. I guess this means the grad students end up dropping out and the Browns are brought back in? Or maybe my eyes were completely deceiving me.

I didn't watch last night's episode yet but I think that's what's going to happen. The injured grad student couldn't even walk. It doesn't seem likely that she's going to be able to keep competing.

I really like the idea behind this show but the editing has been getting on my nerves. I would love to see some of the teams solve the puzzles instead of hearing the same messages from the host 8 times. I'm rooting for the Air Force team but I think I'll be happy if anyone but the Browns or Fogals gets the treasure.

The Browns are out now and Kayte is going to slow down the Fogals enough that they won't win. She's such a drama queen and I think her father said she's 24? Way too old to be carrying on that way. I hate the way she treats her parents too.

I can't believe two people on this show have been knocked out by injury. This is a tough game.

Kayte is SO freakin' annoying! She wins drama queen of the year hands down. They should've just left her behind in the swamp. It was so hilarious when her mom was crying about not leaving Kayte behind. You'd think by the way she was crying that if they did leave her, she'd be murdered or something.

The only team I really like is Air Force. I hope they win this whole thing.
