Real World and Road Rules General Discussion

I just got The Real World New York DVD and being an avid real world fan I was very eager to watch it. And I must say it was very refreshing. I fairly young when the Real World first aired and I didn’t really pay attention until later seasons.

I decided to make this thread because the original premise of the show is so amazing and really inspiring to watch. Don’t get me wrong, I still watch Philadelphia but New York and the other early seasons are very special. They are more about different people with different viewpoints and opinions coming together and now its more sexualized show.

I decided to make a list of all the seasons and the things I remember about each of them. Granted, I haven’t seen the early ones in entirety because I was very young when they aired.

New York- Seven cast members living in one loft. It’s very real because the cast members don’t seem to be into the camera and making a show as much as living their lives and getting to know each other. Also, the show tackles different points of views and shows young adults trying to achieve their dreams.

Los Angles- I don’t remember this season very well. I know that David was kicked out. This season followed the same formula as New York and was even more successful.

San Francisco- Again, I didn’t get to watch this season but I think this may have been the most important season of RW. Having a cast member like Pedro, for instance, forever changed the Real World. Also, the other cast members were interesting as well, Puck included.

London- This is last completely real season where production is not involved. It is sometimes referred to as the most boring season. However, the season did have a few highlights.

Miami- Drama filled household that couldn’t start a business. Interesting cast members that made the season fun filled.

Boston-Working with children, living in a firehouse, hate love, this season had pretty much everything.

Seattle- The best season, in my opinion. The cast members worked at a radio station. Perhaps this season is best known for “the slap heard around the world” but I think the eclectic cast made it one of the best.

Hawaii- Alcohol, drama, ect. This season was intense and difficult not to watch.

New Orleans- Attempts to capture some of the innocence of the first season with cast members like Julie but it doesn’t come off as well. Still a rather good season.

Back to New York- for the 10th season the RW ventured back to where it all began. One of the more boring season but we were forever introduced to Coral and Mike. 

Chicago- Drama, sex, whining. The Chicago season was quite good.

Las Vegas- In my opinion one of the worst, because the show completely lost focus of what it was originally about.

Paris- boring, not very interesting…

San Diego- the cast was interesting but the seemed very young to me- in terms of their actions.

Philadelphia- TBD.

Las Vegas

Yeah, Alton got together with Irulan. She broke up with Gabe mid season. I forget why. They had an "open" relationship but she was falling for Alton.

I didn't watch this season very closely.

My favorite seasons are Boston, London and New Orleans. I've felt the last few seasons have been pretty mediocre at best. This season for example they're constantly having to hype up fake events to get people excited about each new ep.

The series can either be really good or very dull. I think they're really trying too hard now to group up a bunch of pretty people instead of getting people that'd just be interesting to see live together. Till they start doing that again the series will continue to struggle.

My favorite seasons were New York (1), San Francisco, and Los Angeles. I wish they would rerun those again. They ran them so much that they were retired but I'm sure there are a lot of people watching MTV now who are too young to remember seeing them.

London was completely boring and was the worst season until Las Vegas stole that title. I was disappointed in London because I liked most of the people. They just didn't do anything.

Miami, Boston, and Seattle were good. I didn't like Hawaii. New Orleans, NY2, Chicago weren't great either and Las Vegas was terrible. I almost stopped watching. It seemed to go on forever. Paris was okay. I would have liked to see more of the city. I liked San Diego but I'd probably put it near the top of the Hawaii/New Orleans/NY2/Chicago grouping. and Philadelphia is the same way. Maybe I'll put the two of them in their own category below Miami/Boston/Seattle and above those other four.

Season 15 is going to Austin, Texas. I don't think it even matters if they change locations anymore. There's not much the roommates are going to do in Austin that they couldn't do in Atlanta or Denver or Cincinnati.

I agree but I don't think they ever will go back to that. I wish MTV's ratings were available like the broadcast networks. It would be interesting to compare. Occasionally you will read an article that mentions ratings are up or down but that's it. Which recent season was it that was supposed to have such high ratings? Was it Las Vegas?

I'm probably the only Australian to have watched all seasons of the Real World . I've been watching since we got MTV on cable down here, and I slowly but surely became an addict. I must admit I don't enjoy the recent season as much as I liked older ones, but I still watch avidly. My favourite seasons are New York (1), Hawaii & Seattle. London was horrible, as was Las Vegas (if I hear Trishelle going on about how she hooked up with Steven one more time I will personally STRANGLE her).

Who are your favourite castmates?

Everytime I think I've picked them I remember more. Here's my list:

Julie, Heather (NY1), Dan (Miami), Genesis, Sean (Boston), David, Nathan (Seattle), Ruthie, Amaya (such a drama queen, I love it -Hawaii), Melissa (New Orleans), Coral, Mike (NY2), Frank, Brynn (LV), Ace, Mallory (Paris), Jacquese, Cameran, Jamie (San Diego).

Most Hated castmates :
Trishelle, Steven (LV), Tammy (LA), Frankie (SF), Tonya (Chicago), Leah (Paris), Nicole (NY2) and that whore-y one from Chicago (I think) whose name I can't remember for the life of me.

Well that'd also be Tonya. There was also Cara, is that who you're referring to?

Definitely Cara. Tonya wasn't whore-y until after her season. She had that phone attached to her ear the whole time.

Are the seasons coming out on DVD???

I have the entire London RW season taped save for bits and pieces. And some episodes of Boston and Miami which make my top 3 fav RW shows.

I've been a fan of the RW since forever. I didn't watch the first season because I was probably a baby, not a baby but pretty young. I'm 21 now so, I probably like 8, 9 or 10 when S1 made its debut. I remember watching from S3 faithfully.

And of course the S1 & S2 reruns helped me round up the whole show.

Road Rules I watched from the beginning but skipped the second season (and I *still* refuse to watch it).

Am I the only one who actually like Las Vegas ?
I thought it was pretty funny all the drama and love triangles! lol And the housemates were all pretty interesting complex people..I'd like to know where they are now, they should have more follow up shows on the cast members.
My other favorite seasons were San Francisco, New Orleans, Back to New York and New York (1)
I hated Seattle, I actually stopped watching it for a while when they were showing that season..
MTV is currently airing Boston (from 97/98?) but I'm not really liking that much either..
