On the Lot (premieres May 22)

On The Lot: Official FOX Site

Quote:
Lights! Camera! Action! The cameras are about to start rolling on the new moviemaking competition series ON THE LOT, executive-produced by Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg. Actress, author and screenwriter Carrie Fisher ("Star Wars," "Postcards From The Edge"), as well as directors/producers Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour 3," "X-Men 3: The Last Stand"), Garry Marshall ("Georgia Rule," "Princess Diaries," "Pretty Woman") and Jon Avnet ("The Starter Wife," "Fried Green Tomatoes," "Risky Business"), will serve as judges for the series' two "audition" episodes airing Tuesday, May 22 9/8c and Thursday, May 24 9:30/8:30c on FOX. Judges for additional rounds will be announced at a later date.

After receiving a record-setting 12,000 video submissions on thelot.com from aspiring filmmakers around the globe, FOX has officially entered the summer movie blockbuster race with the new filmmaking competition series ON THE LOT from Mark Burnett, Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Television. In the audition episodes, the top 50 applicants will discover the magic of moviemaking when they are brought to Los Angeles to visit a real-life film set for the first time. The 50 semifinalists must endure a rigorous "Hollywood Boot Camp," where they will face the judges for the first time with their personal submission film as well as their attempts at a Hollywood-style "pitch" meeting; a "24-Hour Film Shoot," where each must shoot and edit a short film in a 24-hour period; as well as a "one-page, one-hour" film shoot, where they will have an hour to film a one-page scene with the help of professional directors of photography, camera and sound operators and actors. The judges will give their ultimate feedback and select the Top 18 Finalists, who will move on to compete in the first "Film Premiere" episode.

A special two-hour "Film Premiere" episode, featuring the first films produced by the 18 finalists, will air Monday, May 28 8/7c on FOX. It will be up to the American public to determine the first finalist to be eliminated from the competition; voting results will be announced the following night on the expanded first "Box Office" results show Tuesday, May 29 8/7c. ON THE LOT's weekly "Film Premiere" episodes air in their regular time period beginning Monday, June 4 8/7c, and the weekly "Box Office" results shows will air on Tuesdays 8/7c starting Tuesday, June 5.

One of my fiance's friends was thisclose to being one of the 50 semi-finalists for this show but he didn't make it.

The show looks pretty interesting. I hope it's as good as it sounds.

I'm going to check it out. It's definitely different than all the other reality TV shows out there right now.

i watched last night, i definitely think it's going to be an interesting show.

i'm a film major, so it's fun watching all these other people go through things that i know all too well about.

there were a few standout people in the premiere for me, but it'll be really good when we get to see some of their movies.

Aw, too bad. It would have been fun to watch him.

I didn't expect to like this show but I liked it a lot. There are still so many people that it's hard to have favorites, but I did like the guy who was so confident about his pitch.

Was that the one who had the priest falling in love story where they end up getting married? I liked him too. I also sort of liked the one with the mouse and rat being best buds. For both of them, as they were giving their pitches, I was thinking that I really wanted to see those movies.

Yeah, I think that was him. I also liked the mouse/rat one. That was the animated one, wasn't it?

Yup, it was animated.

I wonder how they decided how many people would do each pitch. I know the actual assignments were random but there were only about 6 people doing the mouse one but about 12 doing the priest one. You'd think they would've split it up so 10 people did each one.

I almost forgot there's an episode tonight. It says it's on at 9:25pm EST and goes until 10.

Why the odd time? Whyyyyyyyyy?

Ratings for the episode weren't very good.

Marc Berman's take:
Quote:
In series-premiere news, Fox’s On the Lot did not take advantage out of the American Idol lead-in, with 8.97 million viewers (#3) and a 4.1/10 among adults 18-49 from 9-10 p.m. (#2). While no one expected the reality/competition to hold the American Idol audience, retention of just 37 percent in viewers and 44 percent among adults 18-49 is disappointing, and a double digit decline in the second half hour is even worse. Take a look:

On the Lot (Fox)
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 11.27 million, A18-49: 5.0/13
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 6.67 million, A18-49: 3.2/ 8
Percent Change – Viewers: -41, A18-49: -36
Since it's summer maybe they'll keep it on anyway.

I noticed the difference in numbers of people who gave the pitches. I was surprised it wasn't even too. I felt bad for that one guy who was the only one in his group not to make the cut.

the rat concept totally reminds me of Finding Nemo in a way. [[Excluding the part about the dad looking for his son.]]

It does! The ideas, even the ones I liked, weren't the most original, but so many ideas that do make it to real movies/TV shows aren't that original either. I guess it's all about execution.
