I found this article. So sad.

Contender in Boxing TV Show Takes Own Life
Feb 16, 8:08 AM EST

The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- A promising young boxer who got the break of a lifetime when he was selected by NBC's upcoming reality TV program, "The Contender," committed suicide.

Police said 23-year-old Najai Turpin shot himself in the head at 4 a.m. Monday while sitting with his girlfriend in a parked car outside the West Philadelphia gym where he trained. Investigators were unsure why he took his life.

An NBC spokeswoman said the producers, cast and crew of "The Contender" were shocked and saddened by Turpin's death. The program, scheduled to debut March 7, will go on as planned.

Produced by reality TV mogul Mark Burnett, "The Contender" will follow the lives of 16 boxers competing against each other for a chance at a million-dollar purse.

The episodes involving Turpin had already been taped.

Percy "Buster" Custus, a trainer who had worked with him since Turpin was 12, said the boxer had enjoyed his experiences with the show but seemed troubled in recent weeks.
He said Turpin abruptly left a training camp in the Poconos and returned home to Philadelphia, saying he missed his family.

"None of us really know what brought this about," Custus said Tuesday. "You just want to see the boys come out of the neighborhood. From the time they're young kids, you really want to see them make it. And he was right there."

Turpin had a 13-1 record and had won a city Recreation Department title before he was picked for "The Contender."

A biography on the show's Web site called him an "extremely soft-spoken" but focused fighter who worked two day jobs to support his family. He had a 2-year-old daughter.

"You would never know he was a fighter," Custus said. "He was a tough guy in the ring. He was a vicious fighter. But outside the ring he was a different man."

Police said they didn't know where Turpin got the gun. He was not licensed to carry a handgun and the weapon was not registered to him.

NBC released a statement from Burnett in which he called Turpin a "great fighter with tremendous heart and courage."

"The episode in which he was most depicted will stand as a wonderful testament to who he was. It will not be changed," Burnett wrote.

A tribute to Turpin will be added to the show. Viewers will also be offered a chance to donate money to a trust fund set up to support Turpin's child.

NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks declined to say how Turpin had fared in the show, which is to conclude with a live championship bout between two finalists in May. She said, however, that the show will not need to be overhauled because of Turpin's death.

Every contestant was being paid $1,500 per week to stay in training pending the finale.

Turpin worked out at the James Shuler Memorial Gym, a haven for serious fighters from a rough and impoverished neighborhood.

Tybius Flowers, another boxer at the gym, was murdered last year shortly before he was to appear as a key witness in a murder trial.

I really didn't want to get hooked into another reality show, and I'm not really a boxing fan, but everyone kept telling me how good the show is so I checked it out last night and now I'm hooked. The personal aspects and life stories of the contetsants really draw you in. And even though I'm not that into the boxing, the fighting is intense and suspenseful. I didn't even know who to root for because I liked both contestants. I had heard about Najai's suicide before I watched the episode. So extremely sad. It made the episode that much harder to watch. I know I'm a sap but I was in tears.........especially in all the scenes with his daughter.

I'm a big fan of this show, have seen every single episode so far and plan on following it all the way to the end

I like how it shows heart, love and then all that it takes to be a champion in the ring as well.

Sly Stallone and Sugar Ray are excellent as well.

I was really rooting for Sergio to win last night. I didn't really care care for the fact that they let Peter come back. Didn't seem fair. I know they were down a guy, but still, he lost, he shouldn't have been given a second chance

I was pulling for Peter. Glad he won and he's going all the way if he keeps this up.

Ishe is still my favorite fighter on the show He stands for everything I believe in and therefore it's easy to support him.

Alex

PS...I'm so glad that Ahmed got eliminated early on...there's only so much I can take of that guy!

The fight between Sergio and Ishe tonight was tough. I think Ishe has gotten somewhat of a raw deal although he doesn't help matters with his mouth. I love Sergio so the matchup was tough for me. Sergio did great though and I'm really happy he's in the final 4.

I wasn't happy that the vote brought Ahmed back. The way the votes went though I think it became obvious to everyone if it wasn't already that this is a game and it's being played. Also interesting to see different bonds and alliances and strategies come out. The matchup between Alfonso and Ahmed was expected. I'm not an Ahmed fan and I love Alfonso so it was an easy fight for me. Most of the time I have been torn between both fighters and who I want to win. This time I was not at all torn. I wanted Alfonso all the way. And boy did he show just how much of a threat he is to win it all. I'm thrilled that Alfonos and Sergio will for sure be in the top 4. I'm also a huge Joey fan so I hope he makes it. I'm still not sure who I want the 4th spot to go to.

I didn't mind Joey stopping at the finish line and letting Manfredo win the truck and power spot. It wasn't against the rules and it sure wasn't the first time that certain things have been done to ensure someone does or doesn't win the challenge. Joey is playing the game and that's ok. I don't think he did it because he was scared. He's playing strategically. It would have been funny though if it had blown up in his face. It was interesting seeing everyone try to influence Manfredo's choice. It was interesting that Manfredo didn't choose to fight Anthony (hamstring injury). I like the fact that he didn't because I like to see them choose someone that is challenging and take the hard route. Nevertheless Anthony was so right when he said that if it was him he would have chosen him because of the injury. There's no doubt he would have. We've seen already that he will take that route with the moves he has made in the past. I thought Sergio pointing out the book and different quotes and parts of the book that Joey has read (actually Sergio has read it too) was great..............Sergio knows how Joey is playing the game and he's right when he says that some of the others are letting him in by not noticing what he is doing.

Next week's episode looks really good.

I felt the same way. Usually I like both guys and can't decide. But not between Alfonso and Ahmed.

I didn't realize there were 2 episodes on last night until the 2nd was 1/2 over. So I missed the competition that Joey let Manfredo win. The Sergio/Ishe fight was very tough. I was definitely rooting for Sergio, since Ishe comes off as such a jerk most of the time. I wasn't excited to see Ahmed come back, but he seemed a bit low key compared to last time with his big mouth. I'm glad Alfonso won. I really like him.
Next week does look pretty good. I'm sure the final fight will be pretty intenese as well, considering we've gotten to know all these guys and I really like a lot of them.

I was so sad to see Joey go home last night. I really wanted to see him in the top 4. Nothing against Manfredo because I think he's alright, but Joey is one of my favorites. Last night's fight was super intense. Joey showed alot of heart and didn't give up. I'm sure he would have won the fight if the fight hadn't been stopped in the last round. That was a tough break although I do understand why they had to do it. That head butt was brutal. I think this was the first fight that was a split decision.............all of them so far have been a unanimous decision. This fight really could have been called either way. I'm so bummed Joey is out.

Jesse really irritated me in this episode for so many reasons.

The preview for next week looks crazy. I wonder what happens.

When they were doing the sprint challenge and the loser had to pick someone in a last-chance sprint...why didn't any of them choose Joey? Maybe they thought Joey was to good, but at least it would have worn him down. Instead all the other guys kept having to do an extra race. I was surprised when Jesse won the last race since he was more worn out. I didn't care for him blowing dirt in Joey's face, but they were pretty brutal fighting it out for the sand bag.

I wasn't sure who I wanted to win at first because with all the editing they make Joey out to be such a bad guy. But he really wasn't. I wished he would have won. Not that I don't like Manfredo, but I kind of feel like he's already lost and just got a 2nd chance to be here so he doesn't deserve it as much. I was rooting for Joey even more after he mentioned his rib but still kept going out there.

Next week does look intense. Jesse and Anthony, right? I wonder what happens that's so shocking. A knock-out maybe, or maybe someone quits?

I don't think Joey was a bad guy at all despite the editing which definitely made it appear that way. Joey didn't do anything to deserve the bad rap he was getting. They all fought their fight to get to the 2nd round. Joey's fight to advance to the 2nd round was a tough fight and he showed alot of heart and really proved himself. That's why I was surprised that Jesse kept talking about how Joey hadn't fought to get to where he was, etc. and how he's trying to get out of fighting a tough fight to win the contest, etc. They've all had the same amount of fights except for Anthony and Jesse who fight next week. I guess Jesse could be referring to the fact that Joey isn't as experienced or fought as much before the show started. That's certainly true...............they are all at different levels.....some are ranked, some aren't ranked, some are experienced professionaly, some aren't, etc. Some of the contestants were mad that Joey let Manfredo win the truck and talked about what a power play it was and how conniving it was, etc. I just don't see how most of them can talk as they are all playing to win and we've seen much worse stuff go down than Joey letting Manfredo win a truck. Why did Joey have to fight Manfredo? Who decided that? The other guys making decisions/matches for someone else before the challenges isn't really cool if that's not what that person wants. I can see why some of them have gone against what was previously discussed. I didn't see Jesse stepping up to fight Manfredo or Joey for that matter despite all his talk. That tells you something right there. At least Joey was up front with Jesse by saying he wasn't sure he was going to fight Manfredo and that he didn't know what match he would go with if he won the challenge. Other contestants have broken from their pre-determined matches without saying a word to anyone and were considered traitors/backstabbers or whatever. At least Joey put it out there that he might make a different choice. So much for being honest/good friend though because it came back to bite him when Jesse went all out to win the challenge and make sure he got the outcome he wanted. Every one of them are trying to make the moves that are best for them.

The sprint challenge was interesting and I'd like to re-watch it. I thought there was more going than met the eye as far as alliances/strategy. I too wondered why the matchups went the way they did. And yes, good point about Jesse being more worn down than Joey because of the extra sprints. I didn't care for Jesse blwoing dirt in Joey's eyes either................granted they were pulling/pushing to get to the bag and it was an all out thing, but blowing the dirt just seemed low and like a cheat move because it put Joey behind from the very beginning. But, that's the way it goes sometimes.

I agree about Manfredo. I like him, but I wanted Joey to advance more. And it's true that Manfredo did get a second chance, so I'm not rooting for him to win it all.

I can't wait for Sunday night. Yes, it's Jesse and Anthony. I can't imagine what could be so shocking!! Anthony is injured and Jesse has a slight injury now so who knows.............maybe someone does go down.

Not the best fight last night but suspenseful as always. The way the episode set Jesse up as being the weaker one because of the injury and weight issue, etc., I had a feeling it would be Anthony that lost the fight.

Jesse annoyed me last week, but he got back on my good side this week. It was nice to see his caring side (about Joey and what happened last week, etc.).

I felt bad for Anthony's kids..........especially the daughter.......when they were watching the fight. It has to be hard to see your dad get injured or knocked out. It's one thing when they are little and don't really know what's going on, but another thing when they are older and do understand how dangerous boxing can be.

So, our Final 4 is Sergio, Alfonso, Manfredo, and Jesse. Should be interesting!

There's also going to be a wildcard fight or something. You can go online and vote for the fighter you want to see come back. I voted a couple of times last night.

I, too felt bad for Anthony's kids. Especially the daughter. The son reminded me of mine...off in his own world checking stuff out. I think I would have a very hard time watching someone in my family box and get hurt.

Well the final 4 fights should be really good. The guys are growing close and becoming pals. I think my 2 favorites are Alfonso and Sergio. Nothing against the other two.

I actually fell for the set up of Jesse looking like the weaker one. I am usually smarter than that! I was really expecting Jesse to either not make his weight or lose. I can't believe how much weight they can lose so quickly. My brother used to do that for wrestling, but I was too young to really get what he was doing.

So I wonder with this wildcard fight, are they going to bring back two with the highest votes and have them fight? Or vote one back to give him another chance at the million?

Alfonso and Sergio are my two favorites also.

Yeah, losing weight that quickly is crazy. I told one of my friends that I need that black sweat suit. lol

I'm not sure about the wildcard fight either. I was wondering the same thing. When I went to vote online there weren't any details so I'm not sure.
