I've always liked to think that, after Harrison picked her, Brooke realized that what Nicole had been saying earlier might be true (she said earlier during their face-off in the Novak? that she knew Brooke and how she'd always be a popularity-whore, and how she was only competing with Sam for Harrison because she loved 'winning' and wanted to maintain her popularity, etc etc) and was so upset with herself that she ran off. If Brooke's not good enough for Sam, then all more so Lily sure ain't. Stupid little uptight poser, never liked her.

Depending on what gender you want to ship Sam with, the best candidates are Lex Luthor of Smallville and Tara MacCLay of Buffy.
