That's a good way to describe season 5. I'm a sucker for angst with all my ships, so I enjoyed Gil and Cath kind of being at opposite ends with each other during that season. But then nothing really came of the fighting, instead they just grew apart. So I don't really watch seasons 6-9 at all anymore. S1 FTW, definitely.

S5 had some golden G/C moments, but we didn't get enough of them, cause of that damn team split!

I preferred the tension of Season 4, because it was about them and their history (e.g., Sam) -- and not outside conflict (the team being split).

Season 5 felt like an excuse to separate G/C and ignore their friendship, while in Season 4, their passionate arguments all stemmed from the fact that they cared about each other.

And Gil was so protective of Cath in Season 4

Yeah protective Grissom is adorable - who can forget the opening scene in Grissom vs. the Volcano? Season 4 is probably my second favorite season for GC. Early Rollout and No More Bets have some amazing angst.

^ ITA. Season 4 is my second favorite for G/C, too.

Early Rollout was a killer episode for them.

It had the scene we talked about earlier, with "How can I help?" Heh.

It had the angst, with them arguing about Catherine taking Sam's check.

And it had the best ending, with Gil's unadulterated look of LUST after Catherine leaves his office for her date. I was surprised by how obvious he was, just staring at her after she left.

And I loved that Cath stopped by his office because she wanted to make sure they were okay. His opinion always meant a lot to her.

Yeah the ending season in Early Rollout is one of my all time favorites for them. I also loved how when he said, "Goin out?" it sounded more like jealousy than curiosity.
Also I forget the episode name from S5 I think, but in the one where Sara yells at Cath about a domestic abuse case, and Grissom fights with Ecklie about keeping Sara on the team. The look Catherine gives Grissom after the scene with Ecklie at the end of the ep. is so intense. It was like, "How could you not have my back?"

I think this was Nesting Dolls. That reminds me of the scene from After The Show where Gil tells her, "I always have your back."

Not a year later, and such a difference

Ugh, so true. The writers really let a great thing go to waste by basically diminishing their friendship in the later seasons.
I love your icon btw! R/Hr are

They really did. It was shoddy writing.

Well, the GSR was right there from the beginning so I think they knew they can't touch Grissom and Catherine from going anywhere further.
