In my s4 rewatch, I caught the romantic setup between Willow and Tara starting from the first episode Tara appeared in – the slowly interlocking fingers and prolonged glances. I don’t know how I completely missed that the first time I watched the show. I had just thought they were going to be witch pals.

I think a lot of people didn't really see it as romantic when it first aired, & I think that the writers kinda wanted it that way, but it did slowly become more obvious building up to NMR

Also, I think the audience was a bit more aware than the other characters were about that relationship blossoming into romance–for a second Buffy thought Tara had a crush on Oz. And Xander seemed pretty surprised too.

Yeah, I mean they - & we - had only ever seen Willow like boys, so I think people just didn't see it coming. If she had had girlfriends before, I expect everyone would have seen it from pretty much their first scene

I remember reading that there was a lot of debate back in the day about whether or not Willow and Tara were a romantic pairing before it was really made clear on the show. A lot of people felt like it was going to happen and others felt like it wasn't true and that Willow/Oz were going to get back together.

I think that's understandable, because I think that was part of the writer's intention. They wanted a good chunk of the audience to not see it as romantic - because I do think it was meant to be somewhat of a twist in New Moon Rising. They wanted to surprise most of the audience imo, but I think they were happy with some people figuring it out too

I think that's something that'll happen every time the writers want the audience to have a surprise. Chances are there will always be a group of people who will figure it out before it happens on screen.

I think they're ok with a group figuring it out early on, because then that shows the rest of the audience that it didn't come out of nowhere
