I loved their 'what if' during Season 1... and then I just started loving their friendship, then I started disliking their friendship and then everything became a cycle.

I always loved their friendship. Things were strained in the later seasons, but I think that by the end of s7, they were as close as they had ever been

I'm just so/so, loved them during Season 1... on and off with Season 2 and 3, loved them again so much during Season 4 & 5. 6 & 7 were so/so seasons as well...

Seasons 6 & 7 were quite strained for pretty much all the friendships within the scooby gang, but I love their scenes towards the end of season 6, & the beginning of season 7 they seemed as close as they had been during the high school years. The middle....eh. But then towards the end when she told him he was her strength

The B/X scene in Hell's Bells when she's helping him get ready is so great, you can just feel how deep their friendship is and how close they are.

Despite it all their friendship is very tight.
It's one of the things I love the most about them.
Buffy understands the strength that Xander has and Xander understands that underneath her slayer power Buffy just wants to be like any other normal girl

One of my favourite little moments is Buffy defending Xander to the Council in her speech at the end of Checkpoint, he'd always been so insecure over his lack of powers and his proud reaction when Buffy stands up for him warms my heart>
