I knew that, and that's exactly why I love Spike's reaction in that moment so much, because i know it came from James himself. It was heartbreaking but so very fitting and well played.

I'm confused now.
This is from the shooting script. Maybe James doesn't remember this right.  A PILE OF RUBBLE -- as Buffy's dead body hits it from a great height. Spike, who must hide from the encroaching sunlight, collapsing in wretched sobs at his failure, at the death of his love.  Doesn't this sound like what happened in the episode?
