The OP looks great.

So this may be an unpopular opinion ,but S1 is up there with my favourites. Sure it's cheesy and so 90's and has its rough moments (I Robot You Jane being a major one), but overall I think it sets out the stall of the show very well and does a great job at establishing the main characters. Prophecy Girl is among my favourite episodes of the series too.

Looking at the airdates in the OP makes me feel really old, I was only 10 when the first episode aired. :goof:

Thank you

Season 1 is also one of my favorites  I don't really get why it gets so much flack or sometimes even hate in the fandom. Yes, it's cheesy and campy, but that's real a part of the charm of the whole show

Don't feel bad  I was 2

I found someone on Tumblr who has just started the show and they're all "I thought this was supposed to be good?" and apparently not loving it. For sure, S1 doesn't give much hint to how brilliant the show becomes later, so I can sorta understand that part of their reaction. But for me it has a real charm that overrides the weak points, and I find myself rewatching certain episodes in particular from it quite often. It's a bit like a TV version of comfort food for me.

I've got friends like that too. And I mean, when you compare it to the other seasons, yes, Season 1 does seem to pale a little in comparison. But the basics of what the show runs on are still there. You've got the Core Four (Buffy, Giles, Xander, and Willow), you've got the demons, you've got the struggle to deal with real life issues on top of the Demon hunting/slaying, and you've got a setting that works really well

Everything that came later had to start somewhere

Yeah most great series kind of start out rough. It's how they develop.
I did love season 1. Even though some of the filming was corny...it had an amazing cast and really good plotlines. And of course SMG as Buffy captures my heart instantly

It's corny at times, but in a charming way

Everyone looks so young :sigh: Babies

I didn't see Season 1 until after the show was in repeats.

I think it was a good starting point and the show just grew from there.

I don't think if anyone else played Buffy the show would have got past Season 1.

Charmed Slayer Angel 08-02-2014 11:52 PM

I agree. SMG brought so much to the character, and she really made her come alive in a way no-one else could.

That was one of the problems with the movie. The characters all felt too stiff, they didn't breathe

Jaime Bee 08-02-2014 11:59 PM

I'm not saying the other characters weren't well cast but from the get go everything is about Buffy more Season 1 than the rest of the seasons IMO.

I think it's funny how SMG was almost Cordy and CC almost Buffy.

Katie Holmes and Selma Blair were also up for the part.

I've never like the latter actress.

Charmed Slayer Angel 08-03-2014 12:00 AM

I honestly couldn't see any of them being cast as Buffy  I'm probably biased because I love SMG

Jaime Bee 08-03-2014 12:03 AM

I can't either.

I can't see anyone other than CC as Cordy either.

Joey on DC was the perfect part for KH.

I do think she is a big part of why DC got a Season 2.

Charmed Slayer Angel 08-03-2014 12:05 AM

As do I  Katie is an amazing actress, but Sarah was just right for the part of Buffy  It clicked, ya know?

Jaime Bee 08-03-2014 12:13 AM

It makes me wonder what SMG would have been like as Joey.

I couldn't see anyone else play Angel either.

I found this on IMDB.

Is this site reliable?

* Series star Sarah Michelle Gellar initially auditioned for the role of Cordelia Chase, and Charisma Carpenter, who plays Cordelia, auditioned for the role of Buffy. Others who auditioned for Buffy and got other roles include Julie Benz (Darla), Elizabeth Anne Allen (Amy Madison), Julia Lee (Anne) and Mercedes McNab (Harmony Kendall). Bianca Lawson, who played Kendra the Vampire Slayer in season 2, originally auditioned for the role of Cordelia.

* Nathan Fillion (Caleb) originally auditioned for the role of Angel when the show was first being cast in late 1996.

* Other actresses considered for the lead role as Buffy also included Katie Holmes and Selma Blair.

* Danny Strong (Jonathan) originally auditioned for the role of Xander.

* Ryan Reynolds was originally offered the role of Xander.

^ I read most of that info in that Making Of A Slayer book by Nancy Holden, so it must be right. I never knew RR auditioned to play Xander though. :goof:

I tend to agree. If the supporting cast hadn't been great early on(which they were), that wouldn't have been too much of an issue and could have been worked on. But for a show like BtVS to do well when so many people were cynical that it could work, the lead role had to be nailed from the get go and really grab the audience's interest. And Sarah was literally spot on from the beginning, the role was hers and immediately you couldn't envision anyone else playing Buffy.
