hello all !! I'm watching Buffy all over again and I'm in Season 4 now. It was not the best season for sure though I like it. It was different, the writers had to change everything from the previous 3 seasons. Without the Angel story in the mix, or the Master one.. they had to come with something completely different.

Personally, I must say the season was brighter and I say that in the literal sense. It's not that dark, there are more scenes out doors and in Giles home, not everything so dark. Spike's return is hilarious and his relationship with Harmony was a good excuse to show something against abusive relationships.

The introduction of Riley was good too. I personally like him as an option for Buffy with Angel gone. He could give her what she needed in her life. It was a shame that the writers then destroy his character.

The Initiative and Mrs Walsh that is a different story. I didn't like that story line. But like I said, the writers had to think about something different and 'more adult look like' because they were not in highschool anymore

So I came here to find a Riley thread ... and yeayy !! thanks for creating one.

You make some interesting points. S4 really had a 'lighter' look to it, I never took time to notice that. It is actually one of the sunnier seasons, (along with S5 I think) with all the daylight/outdoors scenes.

Riley was a great guy and it sucks that the writers couldn't seem to find a way to make his character more attractive for the audience. Some say it comes down to Buffy and her other relationships, but I think it goes beyond that. Sure some people dislike him simply because he was her boyfriend/love interest. But to me it seemed that for the big audience, his character never 'clicked' you know?

I mean, I liked him and he was probably the best shot at a normal relationship Buffy ever had, but he sometimes seemed to be lacking of something more. Like he was too real-life for that show to work among all these other messed up, 'edgier' characters. He was genuinely, all around, a good guy. I wonder if that's also one of the reasons why he left in "Into The Woods", 'cause the audience didn't care much for him..?

I agree with you that Riley was 'too real-life' but come on... the 'edgier' options as of season 4, was only Angel. And with the writers having written that a 'happy moment' was all he needed to become evil... well... that was the first nono to be an option for Buffy. Then ... they come up with the 'ring' option, Angel could have been normal and have a happy relationship with Buffy.. but again nono he had to fight for the Apocalipsis.

For sure then, Riley had to be with Buffy and have the closest to a normal life as she wanted. We have to think that the show belongs to Buffy, she's the main character and we should want her to be as happiest as she can. Therefore, Riley !!

Last week I finished with S4 and loved the episode where B&R got trapped in Riley's room generating sexual energy to the house that used to be an Horphan's house. LOL LOL !! Love their faces at the end !!

Ok. Actually the faces I meant before are the ones they made when Willow says...'oh that must be horrible trapped in a room with no control of your instincts' or something like that .. and Buffy and Riley look to each other and then 'agreed' with Willow ... LOL LOL LOL ..

I forgot another thing the writers did with Angel to not be with Buffy.. the demon blood in 'I will remember' episode in Angel.... yeap yeap.. and all that was in Sesaon 4..
