"I love you.”

Buffy finally uttered these words to Spike in the very last episode of the series and in that moment it all comes full circle. Throughout the series it has been about the love/hate relationship for these two characters, and in this moment it shows how much they have grown together; how much Buffy herself has grown. Their passion for each other has never died, whether it is in regards to fighting or something much more intimate. It is the passion these two have for each that represents the fire that burnt through their fingers with such glowing force. Just a year before, right before the incident that shattered much of the hope between Buffy and Spike and was thought to have halted the growth of their relationship, Spike stated "Trust is for old marrieds, Buffy. Great love is wild ... and passionate and dangerous. It burns and consumes." This is where Spike had it wrong, trust is important to a great love and it was, at the time, the only missing factor in their beautiful love story. In season 6, Spike and Buffy’s relationship is brought to a whole new level, not just with them connecting in a physical way but also emotionally, and it all hinged on one lyric sung by Buffy in ‘Once More With Feeling’, “I want the fire back.” From then on Buffy tried to find the fire that was lost from her life when she died and was brought back from heaven by her friends. In the final moments of Chosen, when the fire burns between their fingers as she looks into Spike eyes, she finally was able to get her fire back. This is the moment where their love became perfect; something untouchable and great because now it has all the qualities it could possibly have: it burns, it consumes, until actual fire appeared on their palms, and it was complete. Now their eyes showed a trust that hadn’t been there before, that had been given back to them the nights before when all he did was hold her in his arms while he slept. It is in this very moment, with the world falling apart around them, that Buffy can say the words, “I love you”, without regret or doubt. This scene is perhaps the defining moment for the relationship of Spike and Buffy and is where their name, Fire Starters, was born.

All: (singing) "Where do we go from here?"
[The words "The End" flash on the screen, then an image of curtains that draw closed over Buffy and Spike as they continue kissing.]

I wasn't planning on hurting you. (smirks) Much.

Buffy: (slurred) You have had *so* too much to drink at this point, I am cuttin' you off.
[They both empty their glasses again. Buffy again makes her alcohol face.]
Buffy: Blaaah! (shakes head)
[Spike watches this with a smile.]

We ... we kissed, you and me. All Gone With The Wind, with the rising music, and the rising ... music, and what was that, Buffy?

I'm a bit knackered. Had a long night
