I've always thought of it that way.

The claddagh ring really was created in Galway, Ireland (where Liam was born and raised) and Angel told her "my people, before I was changed, exchanged these as a sign of devotion" so he would know that claddagh rings are primarily used as wedding rings.

He placed Buffy's ring on her marriage finger. Second to left finger on left hand.

events of Surprise:


In Buffy's dream, she wears a white dress (white dresses are meant to signify purity, almost always the color used for bridal gowns, meant to mirror Drusilla, who took vows to become a bride of Christ, lost her virginity to Angelus)
It's Buffy's birthday (Drusilla even says, "Happy birthday, Buffy.")
Buffy & Drusilla throw a birth/rebirth party at the same time
Angel & Buffy exchange claddagh rings
Angel says "I love you" to Buffy
Angel takes Buffy's virginity
Angel loses his soul and becomes Angelus again

That comes off VERY ceremonial. They got married and then consummated their union.

There was a sort of baptism by water, which Angel would appreciate since he is Catholic or at least responds to Catholicism/Christianity. The meaning of baptisms vary from 1) washing away sin 2) accepting Jesus Christ/God as personal savior or 3) symbolically recreating his birth/death/resurrection.

Throughout that episode, it's all about Birth. Death. Resurrection.

After she put on the ring, they were ambushed by vampires, Buffy was thrown overboard, and Angel jumped in after her. So they both got fully submerged. And then when they fled the factory, they ran through the sewers and then outside in the rain. So they were submerged again.

They were both almost burned by The Judge for containing humanity. Baptism by fire. God is sometimes referred to as The Judge.

YES! It was the closest thing to marriage outside of, actual, you know, marriage. Exchanging of vows and rings. And Surprise was their wedding night.

Which makes the events of Innocence even sadder.
