I wonder if they weren't sure what to do with Riley come S5? If he was meant to stay later or until the end of the season?

I think they didn't know what to do with him after season 4 ended. They tried to keep him there but without The Initiative there wasn't anything for him. He had Buffy, but he really didn't have her by then and he knew it. I doubt they planned for him to stay the whole season. They probably knew like 4 episodes in that it was time for him to go.

Thanks if you're talking to me.

It's sad but Riley was tied to The Initiative and without them he really didn't have a purpose. Buffy didn't need him in season 5. Their relationship had dwindled to him loving her and her liking him.

Riley IMO was never meant to be Mr.Permanent, he was the rebound guy Maybe that's why they never invested a real storyline into his character.

I don't think anyone thought that Riley was there for good, but he could have had a storyline. I mean Andrew had more of a storyline.

I think Joss really liked Tom Lenk though, so that's why he had to develop a storyline in order for him to still be there.

Riley wasnt meant to last. I think he was mostly there, especially in S 5 to show that an ordinary man couldnt easily satisfy Buffy, That she needs a little monster in her man

I think the only 'ordinary' guy who could really work in amongst the dynamic of the scoobies was Xander. I think although Riley wasn't meant to stay forever, they could have done more with him. I don't think they wanted Buffy to end up with an 'ordinary' guy, either.

^ I agree that the only "ordinary" guy that could work in Buffy's life was Xander. Riley was supposed to that guy but he ended up being more Captain America than anything else

Riley was a wholesome, hometown farm boy. And that was different and new for her...

I think the idea of Riley intrigued Buffy more than Riley deep down. In Doomed she said that Riley's normal but doesn't a good relationship come from passion and fire and pain. The only time I saw the passion with Biley was when they were trapped in his room having sex all day/night. I mean I thought they were cute but not passionate or fiery.

No they definitely lacked the passion that I need to see between two people. Even in that episode with the constant sex...it appeared really forced.

I think Buffy/Riley is a nice middle school/high school relationship. You know the guy you loved before you really discovered love? It just happened during her rebound time frame.

Are you sure those lines were from Doomed? I remember them as her convo with Willow in SB. It fit best with the storyline of that ep too, so...
